"Stormwater a sloppy slope" by: Ethan Crowe

When you think of rain you think of a saving grace from the harsh heat of summer, or you might think of a fun time to play around outside. Sadly that time might come to an end. Storm water in the past might have been safe and slightly clean in the past but nowadays it causes many problems in our society. This paper will explain how and why it harms this society and how to prevent it. One of the main reasons storm water is harmful is the air pollution that makes it up most of the rain. Things from exhaust from cars or smoke from cigarettes can harm the air. According to the water cycle the rain accumulates from the air itself so therefore if the air is polluted then the rain becomes polluted

In her book Living Downstream, Sandra Steingraber blends her narrative writing style with scientific research and data to provide an accessible account of the cancer epidemic in the United States and its link to the environment. It is Steingraber’s belief that it is essential for human beings to not only question, but also understand how a lifetime of incremental exposures to chemicals like DDT, PCBs, and atrazine increase an individual’s risks of developing cancer at some point in their life. Throughout the course of the book Steingraber balances her personal experience growing up in rural Tazwell County Illinois, her diagnosis with bladder cancer in her early twenties, and how her environmental exposure to certain industrial and agricultural…

Conflicting demands can start to take a toll on individuals. Society, and individuals, favor distinct choices, with clear consequences. Without clarity, individuals may face pressure to either preserve themselves, or to adhere to the expectations placed on them by others. Often both personal devotion to morals, and exterior demands are valid, shrouding the best choice of action. Obscurity leads to confusion, anxiety, feelings of depression and inner tension.…

Acid rain is caused by certain pollutants in the air, and can also be caused by the burning fossil fuels such as coal-burning power plants, factories, and automobiles. Believe it or not, rotting vegetation and erupting volcanoes can cause acid rain too. Acid rain is a type of acid deposition, either wet deposition or dry deposition, meaning that the rain could appear in any form ("Acid Rain Facts, Acid Rain Information, Acid Rain Pictures, Acid Rain Effects - National Geographic"). Wet deposition is where acid rain is in the form of snowflakes, fog, and some other dry material that settles down on Earth ("Acid Rain Students Site: What is acid rain?"). Air pollution results from the overuse of machinery and the irresponsible feeding practices that characterize industrial farming. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides have turned agriculture into a leading source of water pollution in the United States. Runoff water from these factory farms goes into the ocean and kills fish, reduces their habitats, and affects drinking water supplies. Additionally, factory farms use tremendous amounts of water, and we do not even have a large percentage to begin…

Storm water runoff is generated from rain and snowmelt events that flow over land or surfaces, such as paved streets, parking lots, and building roof tops, and does not soak into the ground. The runoff picks up pollutants like trash, chemicals, oils, and dirt that can harm our rivers, streams, lakes, and coastal waters. Population growths are major contributors to the amount of pollutants in the runoff as well as the volume and rate of runoff from surfaces. Most of America’s waters are too polluted to swim or fish in (https://www.epa.gov/npdes/npdes-stormwater-program). Do you want to help save our rivers, streams, lakes, and coastal waters?…

A climate change is occurring, and in the coming years, it is expected that in many urban areas heavy rain events will increase in intensity and frequency. This will become increasing problematic since the city sewerage systems cannot cope with sudden amounts of water. In dense urban areas, there is too little infiltration space for heavy rainfalls. The available space is either built up or intensively used as impermeable public domain. In some parts of the city, inundation occurred time after time, causing trouble and damage to public spaces as well as private properties.…

Hurricanes are benefitting from the effects of climate change. Humans should be concerned about how climate change intensifies natural disasters, more specifically hurricanes, for it affects our lives and the environment. Places susceptible to hurricanes, such as the Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Pacific Ocean, will be hit by more intense storms in the future if we are not mindful of how to slow down climate change. Hurricanes are formed when the moist air from the surface of oceans rise and meets cooler air as it rises.…
