I was evaluated in many different ways which included them asking me to explain what I saw in pictures, speech testing, my reading and writing levels were evaluated, and I was observed in the classroom to determine my social interactions with my peers. As an adult now, I can look back and understand that I was being tested and assessed to determine my eligibility for Special Education. It was determined in Phase Two by the committee that I met the requirement for Special Education and that I was developmentally delayed. I didn’t like that learning was hard for me and I required further help and attention. I understand now that my parents and the school system were doing what they thought and agreed upon in my IEP meeting was the right path to follow. I now understand the decisions that were made on my behalf were made through the Special Education processes by following the four stages; Phase One- Initiating the Referral, Phase Two- Assessing Student Eligibility and Educational Need, Phase Three- Developing Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Phase Four- Determining the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) (Hardman et al., 2015).
