1. Four main issues I presented in this video are race, sex, socio-economic status, and culture. The video appeared to have an overall framework of African American men, stereotyped into a single group of limited income, inept, as well as suffering from mental illnesses. I believe that it portrayed the worldview of most of white America in an accurate way. According to our textbook, worldview is defined as, “our psychological orientation in life and can determine how we think, behave, make decisions, and define events” (Mio, Barker, & Tumambing, 2009, p. 8). Knowing this really helped me to understand the context of the video, to notice what her perception of the event was, and to contemplate my own perceptions of the events as I watched the video for …show more content…
I think that his reaction was interesting. He did not run her off, nor did he let her take the plate from him, but he allowed her to take bites off his plate with no complaint, even getting up to purchase coffee for the two of them to enjoy together. This leads into gender. I believe that after she drank the coffee, her perception changed and she began to see that the interaction may look like a date. She checked her watch, then, without a word, left. This is also related to sexual orientation. She is a straight woman, and she perceives him as a straight man; she felt uncomfortable in the situation immediately upon recognition, then acted by removing herself. Age is also a factor in this same interaction. If there had been a larger age gap between them, for instance, if the man was around 18, her reaction to him would have been completely different. She might not have perceived him as a possible suitor and continued the meal, or she may have used her age as power and chased the boy off.
