Privilege, An Illusion

I do believe my geographic location has given me is a great education. The school in my home town is known for its great teachers and staff, which is something that has helped me get to where I am today. Geographic locations can have both oppressions and privileges, but I believe that my region has gifted me with privilege. Next, another social identifier that privileges and oppresses me is my education level. I am currently a college student, which in American society is looked at as very positive and as the norm, but since I have graduated from college yet I am somewhat oppressed. Without a degree I am not yet considered to be a good candidate for job positions. Since I do have some college experience I am given privilege over those who …show more content…
The video looked at the issue of race in America throughout history. In the video we learned how race is just a social construct and it has been created to give those in power privileges and the ability to oppress those who aren’t. The video went into detail explaining that race started back when there was a labor shortage within the money crops, so Americans gathered slaves from the western coast of Africa for free labor. From there the government started to make policies that defining what it meant to be a human, which in turn was the beginning of privilege and oppression in the United States. These policies and privileges allowed for United States Americans to push the Native American tribes off their land, it allowed for slavery Jim Crow laws, it allowed for the basically everything wrong that we have done in the past to people who do not fit the mythic norm. This mythical norm is something that still exist today and plays a major role in who has advantages and who doesn’t. These privileges and oppressions are invisible to some and I think we need to change that. In order to do so we need to start pointing out what is wrong in society. We need to start discussing the tough to talk about subjects. I personally believe that I can make a change just by spreading the word to my peers and explain to them …show more content…
When you look at my wheel you can see that I almost have a circle which basically means I can roll through life pretty easily. I believe that privilege and oppression is major issue in today’s society but it tends to be ignored and downplayed by the people in power and the media. This is something that needs to change. We can change this by pointing out what is wrong in society and working together to make the change. I believe in order for this to work it’s going to take a lot of effort and time, so instead of waiting any longer the time to start is
