There are several different kinds of interviews as well as interview techniques and methods. All companies are different, so an applicant needs to be prepared. For all interviews applicants need to research the companies they 're interviewing for and have an idea of their key figures, strategy, and markets (Jacobs, 2014). Once an applicant is selected for an interview they may experience one or more of these interview situations behavioral, phone, or Skype. Knowing how to be prepared for these different types of interviews can allow an applicant to be more comfortable during the interview process.
BEHAVIORAL: Behavioral interviews cuts through the staleness of traditional interviews and makes applicants give examples of when they demonstrated the skills needed for the job. The best predictor of future behavior is recent past behavior (Keever-Watts, year). Applicants will be faced with questions that focus on a substantial variety of skills and behavior. A recruiter can then ask questions they have about those skill sets by asking about different situation you have experienced where you 've demonstrated those skills. Some examples of these questions are What do you when priorities change, give one example of when this happened, give an example of a goal that you set in the past, tell your success and if you 've achieved it, and describe a time when you had to confront someone at work. After a question is asked the applicant needs to be prepared for follow up questions, based on your answer to the original question. The majority of guides on behavioral interviewing suggest to use the STAR process when giving an answer (Hansen, year). STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result, and is broken down into three steps. Step one, talk about the Situation or Task you were in, step two, the Action you took, and step three, the Result of that action. There are no right or wrong answers in a behavioral interview. Concentrate on coming up with truthful examples that answers the question and shows off your skills (Hansen, year) PHONE: Phone interviews can either be scheduled or unscheduled. Usually for scheduled interviews a recruiter will contact the applicant by email, but in reality your phone could ring at any time. So always have your phone within reach and have a professional voicemail just in case you cannot get to the phone. Unscheduled interviews are tough on applicants because they might be caught off guard. Deborah Jacobs (2014), a writer for Forbes Magazine, mentions if surprised by the interview to schedule another time to talk, the recruiter will understand and the applicant can become better prepared for the interview. A good way to phrase this is to tell the recruiter something along the lines of, “Great to …show more content…
So knowing how to be prepared for them is key. Dressing professionally for any type of visual interview is expected, but for Skype interviews its more then just putting on a suit. Having a professional username and picture is just as important. This is the first thing the recruiter will see when they call you via Skype. Applicants want a username and profile picture that is professional so the recruiter will know it’s them. Keeping things professional will prevent the recruiter from having to ask the applicant awkward or misjudging questions (Moon, 2012). Applicants want to prepare their location before the interview. This location should be quiet and free from distractions. Also it is a good idea to make sure the background looks clean and clutter free. This location should have a strong internet signal to prevent from dropping the call during the interview, check the signal before the interview starts. Turn off all cell phones, email alerts, and other programs, to avoid from having unwanted notifications. During the interview, avoid from sitting in front of a window or other sources of bright light to keep your picture clear. Bill McGowan (year), founder and of Clarity Media Group, insists to sit at an angle to the camera with your head turned to the camera so your image doesn 't have the look of a “mug shot”, not to sit to close to the screen, and to look into the webcam, instead of the computer screen (McGowan, year). Finally the applicant should be aware of the transmission delay with Skype. They should wait to ensure the recruiter is finished talking before they
