Similarities Between My Last Duchess And Porphyria's Lover

Robert Browning wrote two very interesting poems, My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover. Both of these poem contain a murder in which a Jealous man ends up killing his lover or lovers. They both tell an important message to men, sometimes they act out in rage and later regret their decisions. Jealousy is a very powerful feeling and sometimes guys don’t realize how controlling they are over the girl. Robert Browning’s My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover share much in common but are also different in a few ways. In both of the poems, the girl does something with other men that anger their lovers. Both men are extremely jealous in this poem and like to have control of the women’s actions. In My Last Duchess the duke says “She smiled, no doubt, Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without Much the same smile?”(lines 43-44). The Duchess is killed in this poem because she smiles to much at other men. In Porphyria’s Lover the man says “From pride, and vainer ties dissever, and give herself to me for ever.”(lines 24-25). Overall there are many more similarities between the two poems, because they both contain the same messages. The most important message revealed by Robert Browning is that sometimes guys can be controlling without even knowing it. Which is wrong because women should be treated equal to men, when in reality women do a lot for guys. Women get taken for granted all over jealousy, men are very easily made jealous.
