Comparing Love And Lust In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Improved Essays
Love and lust. These two things travel closely together and even sometimes overlap. Confusing these two is a common misconception that happens with even the most popular of works. An example of one of these works is Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. It was originally published in 1597 and is arguably Shakespeare’s most known plays. Even in pop-culture today there are still new renditions of this play coming out including the big screen. It seems to be able to reach every age of readers/viewers and unless one is to pay close attention to the story then they will definitely miss the most obvious fact. In Romeo and Juliet it is almost impossible for the “two star crossed lovers” to be able to actually be in love due to the fact that they …show more content…
His whole attitude/deemer is lost because he can get into the pants of a girl he “loves.” Because of this I doubt Romeo knows anything about love. He had compared her to “(Insert what Romeo said about Rosaline)” All those words seem to capture the physical aspect of Rosaline and nothing about her as a person. It is key to remember that the main difference between love and lust is that love you enjoy then more for what they are on the inside then what they are on the outside. With all of the things Romeo had said about Rosaline it suggests that he is feeling more lust than love. The only reason he even went to the party was to sulk over not being with her. But apparently all those feelings can just go away in an instant because the exact same thing happens with Juliet. Everything he had once felt went out the window with one look at a girl that he had for the first time made eye contact with. He then states “(Insert what Romeo said about Juliet)” Just like Rosaline, Romeo is pointing out all of the things he sees of Juliet and never says something along the lines of “She has such a compassionate heart,” or “She is so nice to everyone she meets.” Everything that he feels is the want to have sex with her. That alone is practically the definition of

Love is more than being attracted to one’s looks, but lust is being attracted to one’s looks alone (“The Differences…”). When Romeo only raises the subject of Juliet’s beauty and never speaks of her beyond her appearance, he clearly shows he has lustful infatuation towards Juliet and not true love. Additionally, Romeo rushes into claiming his “love” for Juliet whom he’s known for only a few hours, when he was just in love with Rosaline a couple hours before. As a matter of fact, when Romeo is underneath Juliet’s balcony, other than speaking of her beauty, he speaks of taking her virginity in metaphors and similes, wishing that Juliet would castaway Diana’s virginal clothing. In today’s culture to judge who is the most attractive in a room and give them the attention is a sign of lust, not love.…

The emotional and dramatic quote from Romeo describes his feelings after he is told that Rosaline does no longer want to be with him. If the news of Rosaline is no longer wanting to be with him sends into a fit of sadness it is clear that he is uncombable of handling true and real love. Furthermore, it is not just Romeo who is overly emotional Juliet also exhibits this trait as demonstrated after Romeo is banished, she states she would rather die than be without Romeo. In conclusion, both Romeo and Juliet act based on their overly dramatic emotions, therefore, are unable to make clear and understandable decisions and it is very plausible that their overdramatic emotions lead them into believing they were in love even though the feeling were just a culmination of the events that were occurring at that…

The definition of love states that there is an intense feeling of deep affection towards another present. From reading this first act, it seems as if what Romeo was feeling towards Juliet was not love; it could have been a brief infatuation at the first moment or lust. Certainly there must have been a physical attraction. Near the end of the first act at the party the characters are attending, the reader witnesses Romeo catching sight of Juliet and seemingly forgetting Rosaline, his apparent love that could not be topped, “O, she doth teach the torches to turn bright!/ It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night/ As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear-/ Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!/”…

“Lust is wanting to sleep with them. Love is wanting to wake up next to them in the morning’’ - Dan Simmons, American fiction writer. Romeo and Juliet is a play about two so called “star crossed lovers” who think that their love is so strong that they will be brought together even in death if they cannot be together in life. However, due to their young ages, and small amount of time that they knew each other, they were not in actual love. There is no doubt that they lusted for each other, but in this story, love was nowhere to be found.…

This quotation is referring to the way that Romeo is so fixed upon one girl, Rosaline, and then suddenly is in love with Juliet and wants to marry her. It makes the audience contemplate whether Romeo and Juliet were ever truly in love and if Rosaline had ever shown an interest in Romeo would he have felt the same way about her as well. It is also showing the way that even characters, Friar Lawrence, doubted that is was true love.…

Love is the superseding subject of the play, however a reader ought to never forget that Shakespeare is uninterested in depicting a prettied-up, dainty adaptation of the feeling, the kind that awful artists expound on, and whose awful verse Romeo peruses while pining for Rosaline. Love in Romeo and Juliet is a ruthless, effective feeling that catches people and slings them against their world, and, now and again, against…
