The process of extinction may happen in both classical and operant conditioning, whereby the behavior will become weaker if not supported. By classical conditioning, if the conditioned stimulus is presented recurrently but in the lack of the unconditioned stimulus, then the conditioned response will abate and finally become extinct. As with operant conditioning, if the support is not fulfilled, the reactions combined with it will extinguish.
Although the behavior becomes obsolete, investigation demonstrates that is not inevitably completely forgotten, for responses occasionally appear again after extinction. This process is mentioned to as spontaneous recovery. Take for example Pavlov’s dog, where in the lack of the bell the reaction of salivation will become extinct.
