While standing in a crowd of millions of people in the dark with light strobes moving around, the audience intensely watches two teams battle against each other for the title of “Best in the World.” There are multiple close-calls, yells and cheers from the crowd, and the concentration of the players and fans. This is the future of sports. In the past couple of years, the size of the electronic sport has swelled into an immense amount. The media, which covers the esport’s tournaments, has become similar to the way it covers traditional sports. Despite the growth, there is still a large debate whether video gaming should be considered a sport or not. Although the definition of sport says “physical activity,” esports should be considered a sport …show more content…
One of the main reasons many people do not consider video games as a sport is because gaming does not have any physical activities. The major evidence for this is the definition of sport, “A contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other” (Fredrickson). The side who thinks sport has to be active is not letting any competition become a sport if it does not meet the criteria. However, throughout time words have been changing their meanings such as, "’Gay’ used to mean merry or happy. Today, it is usually associated with being homosexual” (These 12 Everyday Words). There are many words that have changed their meaning because humans like to change the way we speak and how we think of everyday things. Even though the words are slowly changing its meaning, the society does not want to get close to agreeing that gaming can be a sport. ESPN president, John Skipper, believes that “‘(Esport) is not a sport, it’s a competition. Mostly I’m interested in doing real sports. [...] …show more content…
Many people, who are ignorant of games, would not have thought that “44 percent of eSports fans have children, and 38 percent are women. More than half of these fans are employed full-time, and more than one-quarter are above the age of thirty-five. It is also important to note that 52 percent of the market is in North America and Europe while roughly 44 percent is in Asia” (Desai). The viewers of esport are varied throughout society. Like sports fans, they aren’t stuck with one group. Esport doesn’t have only had young boys watching. According to Newzoo about the growth of esport, “The worldwide audience is already 200 million” (Groves). The amount of people who watches this one activity is becoming similar to a type a sport. The rate of increase of the audience is one of the fastest. In fact, esport has so much support from fans and companies that, “The tournament, which featured sixteen teams from around the world, had a prize pool of nearly $18.5 million” (Desai). There are so many people that support the tournaments that it can grow to this extent. Esport may grow into a larger group than sports.
Video games should be a sport because of the supporters and the skills it takes to compete. Just like sports, electronic sports have brought so many people to a community, and its competition has grown to the size of sport’s competition. The stress that

According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, a sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.…

Sporting events would not be where they are at today, if it was not for new media. New media is defined as “the emergence of digital, computerized, or networking information and communication technologies in the later part of the twentieth century” ((Masteralexis, Barr, & Hurns, 2012, p. #442). What new media means to me is, a way to connect the fans in a way that brings in a bigger audience. By providing streaming videos with smart devices, on line information, and instant updates on any team gives the fans everything they need to know to stay informed about their teams progress. This allows people to go about their day and still be entertained with not just sports, but anything worldwide.…

Who knows what qualities something must have to be called a sport? Do we have a list of clearly defined points that are used to judge an activity to know if it is or isn’t a sport? Well I bring this up due to the controversial topic of “Esports aren’t really a sport” and how I disagree with this popular viewpoint. Esports have many traits that are found in other socially accepted sport such as football when a large group is required to work in a coordinated fashion under ample amounts of stress in short periods of time. This is only one of many similarities that Esports shares with other sports that will be discussed.…

While watching a professional basketball game, it is easy to see the impact media and advertising has had on each particular game, but how much do they control the sport? In a perfect basketball world we would see a great battle of “teams” compete for a title, but because of the media, the rise to superstardom has reigned and being a “team” has lost its meaning. Because of the “Americanization” of sports as some are now calling it, our society focuses more on the satisfaction sports can bring the fans, more than the credibility of the sport. After all, society places value on competition and flashy plays, therefore a value is put on the sport itself. In this paper we will look particularly on how media and society has influenced professional basketball, and how the game has changed from an athletic event to an entertainment one.…

Esports can be defined as competitive gaming, most common types of Esports are FPS (first person shooter) based games or MOBA’s (multiplayers online battle arena). However all of these games have the same purpose and that is games where “athletes” play as a virtual character in a virtual world and attempt to fight their way to victory. When I looked at the many definitions of a sport, Like Poker and Chess, Esports are mind-based sports with limited physical activity. Some of the definitions that I found use words “usually” and “or” when talking about the physical activity involved, which makes the case that not all sports don’t always need to be a physical activity. Here are some definitions that I found from the Cambridge dictionary and Merriam Webster dictionary.…
