Pitbulls. When I say this word there can be two things going on in your head. One, you're thinking of an aggressive and dangerous animal that is unpredictable or two, you are thinking of a lovable dog that is just misunderstood. These breeds have been used for many things like “bull baiting”, “rat-baiting”, and dogfighting. Pit bulls aren't as bad as they seem to be. They have a long rough history. These dogs come from two very obedient dog breeds. Some also think pitbulls may have locked jaws and a high bite rate.

Dog fighting goes way back to around medieval times. Before it was outlawed many pit bulls were used to fight animals like bears, bulls and there own kind(1). These fights often where fight till either the dog or the animal dies. As this went on the dogs were abused and raised for fighting. They would beat on the dogs to make them more aggressive. These poor innocent dogs, that did nothing wrong, had to go through torture and pain to then either die or win in a fight. “Rat-baiting” (2) is when you put a dog in a pin with a bunch of rats and bet on how long it will take the dog to kill all the rats in the pin. This is a less harmful one but still very sinister because, these poor rats dont know whats happening. Another one is “bull baiting” (2) this is when you put a couple of dogs in a round pin with a bull and they fight to the death (3) these dogs sometimes make it out but, they are usually in critical condition and covered in blood and all beat up. When these dogs lose they end up getting beat up by their owner or shot dead because, they are in critical condition and need a hospital and because of this background, they have a tendency to lash out sometimes. They were bred to be that way but with good love and discipline they can be a loving house pet but if mistreated they can be a deadly animal that can snap at any moment. Pitbulls were created when bulldogs and terriers were mixed. They are both very obedient dogs and are even called ¨nanny dogs” because of their loyalty (4), which makes it more likely for it to be the owners fault when the dog lashes out and not the dogs. When a dog attacks it was either told to do it or was triggered by something. Like if it was scared it would want to protect itself so it attacks. All dogs do this but, because the pit bull breed is so strong and looks so tough we take it as aggressive and not self defense. For them to be aggressive they would have had to have been abused or startled in someway because, they don't just lash out for no reason they are just like every other dog just with a more violent past. When a dog is abused at a young age as it gets older it will think all humans will hurt them and

Even if the shelter does decide to continue to not adopt out Pit Bulls, there are other options than euthanization. For instance, there are numerous rescue centers that will take in dogs deemed ‘vicious,’ like Pits Bulls, to keep them from being killed. One of these rescue centers is located in North Carolina. Fortitudine Vincimus Rescue Center, also known as “The Fort” was founded by Jake Gardner in 2012. According to Judi Brinegar’s article (2014), “Pit Bull Rescue Seeks Help,” “The Fort" is a nonprofit, no-kill rescue dedicated to alleviating the suffering of all animals, in particular the American Pit Bull Terrier”(Brinegar, para. 2).…

Some individuals may argue that pit bulls should not be allowed to be kept as pets due to a few of the vicious crimes they have committed in the past, however, the entire pit bull breed should not be punished for the act of a few of their counterparts. Pit bulls, as long as they have a positive home environment, the proper social interaction, and get plenty of exercise are no more dangerous than any other dog and should be allowed to be kept as pets. Pit bulls, in order for them to behave well, need an owner that will work with them and give them a proper environment. The reason a lot of bad people used these dogs is because they 're so loyal and they want to please their owner, so if the owner says to do something or the dog is trained a certain way, it 's going to do it. This is another reason these dogs are feared . What a lot of people hear is that Pit Bulls are born and meant to be fighting dogs and because of all media these myths spread real quick, and then you have this breed that is being bred all around the world and used for the wrong things. Truth be told, this is not what Pits are meant for, according to “Pitbull Myths”, “This breed is routinely used for: obedience trialing, conformation showing, weight pull, Schutzhund (a German sport which requires dogs to perform in obedience, tracking and protection phases of a competition), agility, and have even been known to…

Think about it; who trains these dogs and why are people being bitten?…
