Shermer's The Facts Of Evolution Fact Or Fiction?

Improved Essays
Evolution fact or fiction? Well according to decades of research it is a widely accepted fact, a phenomenon that still causes controversy between the faithful and the scientific community. Shermer discusses in “The Facts of Evolution” the countless evidence that proves the existence of evolution and disproves creationists. He also explains the evolution that people still see around themselves, not just the idea of apes slowly transforming into humans which is the most popular way people interpret evolution. Shermer provides a multitude of arguments for and against evolution, in a way that proves the theory, and discredits any other rival theories.
Among scientists and creationists evolution has always been a sore spot. However, Shermer writes “The Facts of Evolution” to finally put the thought that evolution is discredited to rest. Shermer first explained that Darwin was studying Natural Theology, and origin came from God. Darwin attempted to prove God’s existence through the evidence that he could see around the earth.

But then sudden changes in species quickly by allopatric speciation would leave very little transitional carcasses. Darwin discovered this by studying the finches, he discovered that the finches on the Galapagos Island were very similar to the finches on the coasts of South America. However there were some changes. These changes led him to believe in allopatric speciation and the rapidly changing characteristics to help the finches survive in the new climate. And these rapid changes led very little transitional carcasses. Shermer shared that it is a wonder that so many fossils survived because the organisms would have to die in a way that did not decompose their body, would survive years of war, and natural disasters, reaching fossilization and then finding ways to get back to the surface by letting an archaeologist find

From Lucretius, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, to Darwin, Smith and Lamarck, many Philosophers, artists, and scientists have produced theories of evolution in attempts to explain the living and non-living creatures around them. ‘Charles Darwin’s grandfather, Erasmus Darwin…”a British physician and poet… proposed that life had changed over time.” “The possibility of common descent based on changes undergone by animals during development…”Evolution is a fact, the theory of evolution explains how evolution works. Although, the theories of Creationism and Darwinism will always have their separate supporters, and most will never change sides no matter what evidence comes to light. Charles Darwin created the theory of evolution, and through his books, made it public. While on his five year voyage, Charles visited the Galapagos Islands and noticed how each island seemed to have its own exclusive species of finch that were different from the ones on the mainland. Through this and other observations, Charles concluded that living things are always changing to adapt to their environment. After about 23 years after his voyage Charles published The Origin of Species. There was much controversy about it.…

“Evolution as Fact and Theory” by Stephan Jay Gould outlines the constant taxing debate over evolution among creationists and evolutionists. He outlines the major issues that fuel the dispute and provides the logical and scientific approach to evolution for a clear argument against the claims of creationists. He firstly, provides a thorough explanation of the misconceptions of the definitions; “theory” and “Fact’. In the common vernacular a fact may be perceived as undeniable information with absolute certainty. (gould)…

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change” – Charles Darwin. Evolution is “the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth”. The theory of evolution has become one of the most controversial topics in science because of how the public reacts to the contents of the theory. The theory is controversial because it posses the debate of whether God or a supreme being played a role in the process of evolution or that humans have evolved naturally over time. Many opponents of the theory argue that science is a knowledge that can only be repeated, demonstrated, and observed and evolution can only be believed in.…

Finally, a scientific theory is a hypothesis that is then supported by observations and explanations. It may be right, wrong, or even partially wrong. There are various evidences that support the Theory of Evolution and many others that prove it's opposite. Some people are against the theory, others believe and even added more and more ideas to it. There is no strong scientific evidence that proves that either side is 100% true and…

Evolution is a polarizing subject that some people may choose to regard it as fact while others may choose to regard it as a mere theory. Most people, including scientists believe that evolution is a fact because the evidence supporting it is very strong. However, others are reluctant to believe that evolution has happened because it may contradicts their holy beliefs and because no one has seen it happen. Evolution is a theory or a fact only to the extent that people are willing to accept it a theory or a fact. The Scopes Trial in 1925 sheds some light on the attitudes that people once had towards evolution.…

It is also true that many of the living things on earth now were not all existing during the past with dinosaurs, such as, birds and mammals. Since, dinosaurs don’t exist in the present time and birds do, then it must be correct that all life on earth evolved from previous ancestors such as birds from dinosaurs and humans from apes. On that note, Gould’s argument on evidences from the fossil records suggests one of the most famous example of fossil transition called Archaeopteryx. It is a genus of early bird that has a combination of feathers and structures of a bird with features such as teeth, pony tail, and legs of a small coelurosaur dinosaur. Additionally his third argument outshines the beliefs of creationist over the evolutionist because it questions that if God created human species long time ago, then why God added more modern features in a chronological sequence such as reducing face, teeth, and etc. to humans.…

Evolution is factual despite the great amount of people who don’t believe in the recent discoveries. There are numerous facts supporting Darwinian evolution, in which, Scientists today are finding species splitting in two, observing natural selection changing animals and plants before our eyes, and discovering more and more fossils capturing change in the past-dinosaurs that have sprouted feathers, fish that have grown limbs. Jerry Coyne eloquently shows that evolution does not destroy the beauty of life but enhances it. Jerry Coyne clearly confirms that evolution is more than just a theory: it is a fact-a fact that cannot be doubted by anyone with an open mind. There are many other scientists and their most recent discovery that can attest to the fact that evolution is indeed true.…

In the world we live in all organisms change, and were not the same thousands of years ago as they are today. There are two main theories to this process; scientific theory and religious theory.…
