In Shadow of a Man, the author focuses on a more specific racial group, Chicano families. And in addition to that, the major character Lupe is a lesbian. This double-marginalized identity gives Lupe even more confusion and frustration than characters in Death of a Salesman. Fortunately, the suicide of Manuel, Lupe’s father, at the end of this play gives Lupe freedom to embrace what she truly wants to be and she finally has the courage to confront the unfair treat towards her sexual orientation. If there is a difference between Death of a Salesman and Shadow of a Man, that would the tone of the ending of the play. Arthur Miller leaves the ending part as a total tragedy.
