The Importance Of Sexuality For Older People

Improved Essays
Sexuality provides the opportunity to express feeling of love, strong feelings of pleasure and wonder, and true and positive statements of one’s body and its functioning. Many people judge others because of a stereotype or based off of what others say. I think that, as a community of people we tend to suggest that as we get older we lose interest in being sexual. Sexuality is something that is looked at as a younger generation activity for either just fun, or for reproduction. Younger individuals tend to come up with the idea that older people don’t do many sexy or spontaneous things. Judging a book by its cover, people should never do that. When looking at older people in a sexual manner, people sometimes find it to be disturbing. I choose this cartoon image because it shows a man broadcasting live, asking an elderly couple “what do you think about this study that says senior citizens are having sex two or three times a month?” and the older gentleman answered in a joking but serious way “that’s all?”. You can see that the woman started blushing by his comment back to the broadcaster. Which shows that they found it to be hilarious, because it isn’t true. This is an example of someone judging others based off of what others say or assume. He obviously did a test, asking people how many times do you think the elderly are sexuality active? and that’s what society choose. They gathered this information based off the assumption of the younger generation. The cartoon makes you believe that older people partake in sexual activities more than the younger minded people believe. It’s protruded as so because of how the elderly man answered back to the broadcaster with what he was asking him. This cartoon showed me that just because society says things about older people doesn’t mean that it’s true. Even though the words on the illustration was brief and didn’t say many words, it spoke high volumes to me. I feel that young individuals shouldn’t be the only people to be able to feel the pleasure of having sex. We shouldn’t look at older people and think they only have sexual relations a couple of times a month. We could come across elderly people who have nothing wrong with them and have an extremely active sexual life. Some people verbally and physically show their disgust with elder sexuality. I myself find it to be adorable when elderly people show love in public. I want my husband and I to be one of those elderly couples who, have a great sexual life. When I walk past a older couple doing something as small as holding hands, or giving each other a kiss, it makes me smile. When I see it I usually look to my husband and tell him “aw, that’s going to be us when we get older”, it’s a beautiful thing. Other reasons why people may believe the older you become the less sexually active you are, is because it can be true. Sometimes the elderly has no choice but to not be sexually active. As the elderly get older they are faced with illness or their body weakening. It sometimes becomes a difficult task to have sex or any other type of sexual relation. It could be that they don’t have the energy to or they just can’t. What I mean by they “can’t”, is that they have an illness that doesn’t allow them to be sexually active. Some problems that elderly people have that could decrease your ability wanting or having sex is, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, chronic pain, and diabetes because of the medicines used to treat it. Older women ability to enjoy …show more content…
They also begin to have problems with getting “in the mood” for sex in general. “Men with erectile dysfunction, once called impotence, have trouble getting or sustaining an erection long enough to have sex. It 's a common condition, affecting as many as 30 million American men. Erectile dysfunction affects older men more than younger men. About 1% of men in their 40s, 17% of men in their 60s, and nearly 50% of men 75 or older aren 't able to achieve an erection sufficient for intercourse” says Harvard Health Publications. Even though some older men have issues having sex it doesn’t mean that they don’t want

Sexuality is more than just sexual activity. It is a part of what makes us human and it is anything that constructs sexual feelings. Unfortunately, individuals are restrained from expressing and embracing such art. Certainly, there are expectations imposed on society as individuals are caged up trying to live up to such conservative expectations and traditions of purity and heterogeneity (Kilgore and Ranu 359). Therefore, sexuality is influenced by various aspects in our life from past to present events that have shaped our identity.…

As depicted in the film by Kay and Arnold, many people believe that older couples sleep in separate bedrooms, avoiding any romantic interactions. While the idea is sometimes true, the majority of couples continue sexual activity regularly. According to one study, 73% of respondent who were between the ages of 57 and 64 were sexually active. While the study showed that sexual activity did decrease with age, 26% of respondents ages 75 to 85 still participated in sexual activity (Lindau et al., 2007). Kay and Arnold, unfortunately, were part of the 27% that did not continue sexual activity.…

Unfortunately this is how society values majority of people based on these contemporary rules. Sexuality is socially constructed because of contemporary rules of sexuality and how society views sexy. Society views sexy when a person (usually a woman) is sexually objectified, meaning the person is reduced to just the sexual appeal. When people do this, young women tend to self-objectify meaning they internally tell themselves that their worth is based on their physical…

Our society’s perception of sex and sexuality is influenced by various factors, such as the media, culture, and religion. The media influences our perception of sex by oversexualizing women and over masculinizing men in advertisements, music videos, television, and film. Female models and actresses may dress or act in a provocative manner to gain attention by the media and particularly from men. Women may be influenced to imitate these behaviors, or even exaggerate their sexuality, to appear desirable to men. Women may also feel unconfident when comparing their bodies to those seen in the media, creating an unhealthy perception of their sexuality.…

It is highly important to educate adolescent age adults early in their development about human sexuality and the effects of it. Poor education results in unfortunate situations; which is why a valuable education is needed in dealing with adolescent aged people. However, I believe adolescent age adults don't necessarily process the helpful information in ways expected by the educators of sexual human development. Sometimes educating teens and getting them to learn important information that may somewhat appear to be quite vulgar requires extensive and complicated techniques of educating.…

What we understand to be true about sexuality begins to ingrain itself in our person since the time we are born. At a young age, our parents influence our beliefs on sexuality by teaching us what is right or wrong for our gender. Over time, our peers and the media contribute to our understanding of our own sexuality as well as others’ sexuality. We are taught and socialized to follow societal norms or otherwise be faced with the possibility of being viewed negatively by others. Impositions by one 's society and culture aid in determining our attitudes towards sex and the perceived role of sexual activity in individuals.…
