Senior Writing Project: Social Issues Among Athletes

Every semester at Ironwood, seniors stress about the senior writing project. Since this was the second semester assignment, I felt a little bit more prepared considering the fact that I had already written last semesters senior writing project. Although the guidelines of this paper were very different, I didn't feel the need to be so stressed about this assignment. Going through the list of possible topics to research, none of them really grabbed my attention, which is when I began to worry. People were already doing their research on their topics and I was still staring at the list of topics trying to decide what interested me. I knew I wanted to chose a topic that actually interested me, because if I didn’t I wasn’t going to put in very much effort into this paper. Once I found out that I didn't have to chose a topic from the list, I started to google “social issues involving athletes” since athletics really do interest me. However it was pretty difficult for me to find research supporting both sides of my issue. Most was just stating how athletes shouldn't be role models, which is when I decided that I was gonna argue that they weren’t. As I did more research, I came to realize that the only reasons people believed that they shouldn't be role models was because of their past decisions, and not much focused on the positive actions that athletes take part of off of the camera.
