Reflective Essay: My Experience In Professional Sports

During the spring of 2008, I was playing baseball in a 10 and under league. I had been playing on the same team for two years with some friends from school. The team’s name was the Lake Shore Bluesox. Our team was in a travel league where we would play teams across the state of Maryland from different counties. We practiced three nights a week with a game on Friday, along with three games over the weekend. It was a lot of hard work, but we won almost all of our games. Our coach told us that if we kept up a good record, we could be invited to a big out of state tournament. One day when I was relaxing after practice, my mom said my coach was on the phone and wanted to talk to me. Before I even put the phone to my ear I heard him shout, “We are going to Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York!” A wave of excitement swept over me and I started jumping around the house. For the next month and half, the only thing my teammates and I could talk about was going to Cooperstown, NY. …show more content…
When we arrived at the Dreams Park it was astounding. There were baseball fields everywhere with huge bleachers, tall announcer’s boxes, dugouts that looked like they should be at a University, and grass that looked like it was cut by a barber. Since it was a national tournament there were teams from all across the country and I was in a euphoria meeting kids from all different states that loved baseball just as much as me. Since the tournament was five days long at the least, all the teams were required to stay in a cabin in the park with their teammates and coaches. My teammates and I had a blast playing whiffle ball and Nerf basketball during our times off the field. Another part of this trip that is unforgettable is that we had a buffet tent which we were allowed to visit whenever we wanted and they served every food a kid could

July 22, 2012 was one of my favorite days of my life, it was the day we won the Gopher State Baseball Tournament. We got to take a coach bus up to target field and walk on the field with all the other age groups that also won. On the way up no one could sit still we were all exhilarated to be on a Major League Baseball field. But before we get to that, we should start at the beginning of the season and the state tournament. It was my first year of Royals baseball…

I stared in at my catcher, Drew Wessel, beads of sweat fell off my forehead. It was the bottom of the sixth and we were one out away from winning the World Series, he flashed me a two which meant curveball. I checked the runner, got my grip on the ball, and checked the runner again. I lifted my leg and let go of the ball. We were the last game of the tournament, it was August 1st and the daylight was just starting to slip behind the Rocky Mountains in center field.…

During that very special baseball game I was beasting at shortstop. Every time a ball was hit my way I would either catch it or scoop it up off the ground depending on what type of hit it was but if the ball came my way my fans already knew what was going to happen. My fans already knew that I was going to get the batter out or get a double play and most of the time I did. It felt so great knowing that I helped my team achieve excellence and earn victories. My team had a very strong and unstoppable defense and if it wasn't for our teamwork, we wouldn't have had such a successful season.…

I flew around the field and made plays, while backing it up in the batters box with my bat. My performance was sufficient enough to be extended an invite to the Area Code Games! I was ecstatic when I received my invite and celebrated with my family, and throughout the excitement, I knew my work wasn't done. I can remember arriving to the field to meet my team in Long Beach and seeing Palm trees in the outfield and a Fresh-off-the-press New Balance bag with all of my assigned gear in it. I knew then that my work had payed off and that experiencing that failure in the summer of 2015 was the fuel I used to get here.…

What I was looking forward to doing my senior year, was leading my team as a senior to the best we could be. I was working harder than I ever had all winter long leading up to this. I had one goal that I did not see happen any of my four years there, which was getting to the state championship. There were a lot of things that had to go right for this to happen. The team had to be good, they had to work hard every day, they had to win districts, they had to win regional’s, and the most importantly the team had to get along great they have to be a family.…

In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…

I also dwell upon having to play first base where the dirt was so hot that would feel as if my cleats were melting to my feet. Our field had taken so much punishment from our two-a-day practices that any minute the baseball could take a bad hop and “eat up” an infielder. However, all of the hard work, pain, sweat, and suffering paid off in the end, we were in the state championship game for a second year in a…
