“The Bilingual Education Act was in acted as an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The goals of this program was to help educate Spanish speaking children in the late 1960’s. Activist argued for the use of bilingualism in schools pointing out the high dropout rates of Spanish speaking students. Slowly the atmosphere of English only, started to change as prominent politicians such as Lyndon b. Johnson advocated for the use of different languages, (Spanish in his case) in schools. Since then there have been ongoing struggles between the English only campaign and the campaign for bilingual education. One reason for this may be a call for nationalism instead of a more global and culturally accepting view. History has shown us that after catastrophic events, such as world war one or September 11th, society tends to have a trauma response out of fear. After world war one, there was an anti-German immigration movement, after world war two there was an anti-Japanese movement, during the Vietnamese war there was an anti-Vietnamese movement after September there have been active anti-Muslimism movements and during the last election there is an increase in deportation movements. All these fear responses offer one reason for and English only party. It is easier to act out of fear and be less accepting of
