So, I decided to become a school psychologist to have the opportunity to help students who may not have access to therapy outside of school, and also to find answers to why a child might be having difficulty in school. Methods When researching this career I looked for a school psychologist to interview for a credible primary source. I chose to interview Dr. Grabsky, a school psychologist, because she has several years of experience and was able to make time in her schedule to meet with me. She was able to help me gain a better understanding of what an average day is like for a school psychologist, and what school ai would need to get there. Besides interviewing someone with first-hand experience, I also looked at a test that school psychologist often administered to help diagnose students with certain learning disabilities. School psychologist use writing skills when grading these tests, writing notes about the results, and often writing recommendations for student treatments. Dr. Grabsky also writes patient notes during counseling sessions to keep track of any change in behavior, so writing is probably the most important aspect in her job. As such, there is a lot of school required to get into such a trusted position. School psychologist need at least a master's of education, but a doctorate is recommended. Dr. Grabsky says that having her doctorate has given her a lot more freedom in choosing her hours, and she highly recommends it if I continue to pursue school psychology. Also, school psychologist have to complete a 1200 hour internship, which usually takes a year. The majority of the psychologist's job is spent in conferences and therapy sessions with student or groups. So, school psychologist have to have excellent communication skills. It’s very important that they are able to interact with children and also parents. If a child is diagnosed with a problem like a learning disability, the psychologist needs to be able to communicate with the parent to discuss the next
