Competency 7: Assess with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations and Communities.
While working with clients, it is extremely important for an assessment to be done in the beginning of the relationship. This assures the social worker that the work being done is what the client feels is the most important for them to work on. Assessments should continue to be done throughout the helping-relationship. The intervention goals should be mutually agreed upon by the social worker and the client. The intervention should also be appropriate for the client’s situation and based on a background knowledge of research. As we started to plan each task and work with our clients, we realized the needs we were intervening with were not the felt needs within the community. We decided to scrap the ideas we had and produce a needs assessment based on the communities’ ideas. We spoke with the counselor, the psychologist, multiple community people, and the school principal. The community as a whole was in need of many different interventions. We decided to focus on the needs within the school aged children. We saw that the children were struggling with a heightened school drop-out rate, increasing child marriages, not receiving support at home or in the community, and a lack of coping skills when dealing with difficult situations. Because many of these issues wind down to the lack of support from family and community members, we decided to create two workshops which would teach 7th standard students coping skills 9th standard student’s healthy relationships. Student drop-out and child marriage rates were an intertwined issue, so focusing on the importance of education became a theme in our presentations. While planning our interventions, we were able to discuss with the principal and local community members to make sure we were approaching the topic in an appropriate manner. The assessment became beneficial for the children through the workshops and was beneficial for our relationship with the community. We were able to show the members of the community we are there to help them, not to dictate what they should be doing in their
