Throughout my senior year of high school I was often asked what I was going to do when I graduated. I had no solid plan, no idea what I was passionate about, and certainly no plans. I had been so busy focusing on getting through high school that I had lost sight of the future. When it came time to try and make a decision, I looked at my classes and my grades. I excelled at math and science. I briefly considered pursuing a career in engineering. However, the thought of spending the foreseeable future focused on numbers made me slightly nauseated. I had to figure out what I was passionate about and when I did it all became clear. The one thing I was most passionate about in life was people. I had always enjoyed helping my friends through their struggles. I wanted to be the kind of person that others can depend on and look towards in the worst times of their lives. As a freshman, I registered to become a member of the university’s honors program. This provided me with class sections designed for high achieving students and made completing a research thesis a requirement for graduation. I dedicated myself to excellence in the classroom and in the community. Each spring since I was a freshman, I have participated in an event that brings high school students to campus in order to learn about various areas of psychology. We have found great success in this event and have continued to invite students to campus each spring semester. As a senior, I did not try to simply coast through my final year. I completed a practicum experience working as a counselor’s technician for a local drug and alcohol rehabilitation center that involved over 250 hours of work experience.
