Speech/ Language Pathology
This article is about Speech and Language Pathology. Speech and language Pathologists work with people who cannot produce speech sounds or cannot produce them clearly, or those with speech rhythm and fluency problems, (such as stuttering). Also, they work with people with voice disorders, (such as wrong pitch or harsh voice).They work with those also with problems understanding and producing language, or people with cognitive communication impairments (such as attention, memory, and problem solving disorders) and they help prevent swallowing trouble. Other courses in audiology or speech pathology programs usually cover physiology, acoustics, audiology, language development and anatomy. In the required courses, students learn to evaluate and treat speech and swallowing disorders. They sometimes need to complete internships or teaching experiences. BLS(2014-15) stated almost half of all speech-language pathologists work in schools. The rest mostly work in healthcare facilities like hospitals and offices. Others work in patients’ homes. As reported by NIOSH(1999) , Three methods for dealing with stress for speech and language pathologists are Exercising, Getting enough sleep, and having a healthy diet. There are a lot of situations that cause stress in work and even the daily life. Mostly everyone agrees that job stress is caused by the worker’s characteristics and the working conditions. The working conditions can have a direct influence on the worker’s health. Other causes are balancing between work and family, friends, and having a positive outlook. Exercising helps to deal with stress by releasing any negative energy that builds up with some such as anger. For the Audiologist, a doctoral or professional degree is required. For Occupational Therapists, just as a SLP, a master’s degree is required.
