The weakness of political power, and foreign invasions led to the major downfall of Rome, military weakness. By this I mean, the Roman empire failed with control and effectiveness. One example is in document A, almost all of the Roman emperors were assassinated. “Maximinus 235-38 CE Assassination Balbinus and Pupienus 238 Assassination, Gordian III 238-44 possible assassination, Gallus 251-53 Assassination, Aemilianus 253 Assassination, Valerian and Gallienus 253-60 Died as slave of Persians; assassination, Quintillus 270 Assassination or suicide, Aurelian 270-75 Assassination, Tacitus 275-76 Possible assassination, Florianus 276 Assassination, Prous 276-82 Assassination, Carus 282-83 Assassination, and Numerian 283-84 Possible assassination.” …show more content…
For instance, one group of foreign invaders was called the Huns, they were a part in the denial of Rome, “The Huns exceed any definition of savagery. They have compact, sturdy limbs and thick necks… Although they have the shape… of human beings, they are so wild in their way of life that they have no need of fire or pleasant tasting” (Document D) Document D shows that the Roman empire was attacked by such “Unthinking animals”. The Huns threatened to take the Roman empire, but instead took over Italy, but not Rome itself. And, the group that defeated or “sacked” the Roman empire was the Germanic tribes, the Visigoths, and the Ostrogoths. The Visigoths were the first to arrive in Rome, and they took over killing the last emperor. Where Odovacar became the first German ruler of Rome. Lastly, the main reason why Rome fell was because of military weakness, “because of negligence and laziness, parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it.” Because of the army's laziness, when the Huns, visigoths, and Ostrogoths came and attacked they weren't very prepared so they lost. Also, “there fail of conscription of senators, bureaucrats, and clergymen were entitled to avoid the draft; and among other groups who escaped were cooks, bakers, and slaves.” And there was steady inflation, so the servicemen instead received pay in salt, clothes, and food

Rome’s decline can be correlated to military problems of such nature. Disregard for safety and change in training techniques led to lack of heavy armor and sufficient preparation. The Roman military fought without any protection and therefore, many were killed while engaging in battle (Document B). The fall of the seemingly all-powerful Roman Empire has been blamed on a tremendously long list of mistakes and events that are still heavily debated in today’s society; some examples of the these events include the invasions of various barbaric tribes into Rome, the economic decline and overspending of Roman society, the splitting of the empire into the East and the West, and even the rise of Christianity. While all of these causes likely contributed to the overall downfall of Rome, one in particular stands out—the copious invasions of growing barbarian tribes into Roman territory. The Visigoths, Vandals, and Huns are only a few examples of the plentiful number of barbaric factions that had a hand in Rome’s devastating collapse (Andrews).…

The Roman Empire was a great and powerful force that influenced many other civilizations after it fell, but before and leading up to its decline it faced many problems. The Empire fell due to the cause of internal and external problems: unstable economics, weakened political and government structure, and ineffective military. These problems show that In document 1, it states that inside the empire the few citizens believed that “the old civilization was worth saving [anymore].” The Roman’s did not feel the pride or morale that they did earlier in the empire, and as they were slowly “excluded from political responsibilities” it led to social inequality and when they could no longer protect themselves there was no chance to rebuild from the…
