Role Of Heroism In The Odyssey

When most people think of a hero, they think of someone in a movie or a comic that wears a cape and has super strength. The word “hero” was first introduced in the 14th century to describe someone who has super strength, and immense bravery. The definition of a hero has changed over the decades, yet this is not the full definition of heroism although many think so. A hero is someone that should be a role model to others, and someone that people should respect always. Although many people believe that heroes need to be strong and have had done something that affects a great amount of people, as long as someone changes one person’s life for the better is a hero. A hero is rather someone who is simply caring for others, and helps others without a doubt in their mind. They respect other, and are role models for others. This is why Odysseus is not a hero in The Odyssey. He was only worried about himself, and how he was going to get back to his family. He might have helped some of his men at times, but they ended up all dying at the end. Odysseus seemed not trustworthy at times because he sent his men into the danger before him at times, and he didn’t tell them about the six-headed monster that was waiting for them. A hero is not someone who has to have certain qualities, but they do have to obtain trustworthy, courage, and the drive to help …show more content…
Lisa Dreesman, my aunt, is a hero in more ways than one. She is more than just courageous and a role model. She is mentally strong, she is selfless, and she is kind to everyone she meets. She lost her husband to suicide, but she didn’t hide it away, she decided to march for what she believed in, just like Martin Luther King Jr. She is not a typical hero, but she is a hero that everyone should follow because she is a very special person. Lisa says, “We don’t wear capes but we make a positive difference. That is heroic” (Dreesman). This quote fits the definition of a hero because a hero doesn’t have to look some sort of way, or have non-human-like abilities; they just have to make a positive difference in someone’s life. There are many people from the past that have done something that shaped the world to what it is today. Abraham Lincoln, Rosa parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. are some heroic, well known people. Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist who believed that colors of skin should not matter, and that everyone should be treated equally. His actions resulted in thousands of people acting with him. He was brave because before that, no one was brave enough to speak up for what they believed in. So many people wanted to follow in his footsteps, and so many people looked up to him making him a role

A true hero, such as Odysseus, should be courageous and never turn down a worthy challenge. In one of many scenarios where he shows courage, Odysseus and some of his men are trapped in the cave of Polyphemus, a solitary Cyclops, who periodically eats a few men. Odysseus is carrying out his escape plan, he says, "Courage-no panic, no one hang back now!" (Homer, 19). When Odysseus says this, he is attempting to rouse courage into his men, because their escape will undoubtedly be difficult.…

When you hear the word hero you might think of Hercules, strong, golden tan, magical, unlike any normal person. A hero is someone who saves the incredibly gorgeous princess from the terrible tower just in the nick of time, but it doesn't always have to be like that. To me a hero is someone who goes out of their way to improve the wellbeing of the people around them. For example, little Suzie gets her kite stuck in a tree and is just too short to reach it.…

A hero is “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” That is the boring, computerized meaning of a hero. Romain Rolland once said, “A hero is a man who does what he can.” There are many people that think of heroes as the superheroes they see in movies, but there are millions of people that are considered heroes by their children, friends, family, and maybe even strangers. A hero doesn’t have to be someone that changes the world; a hero can be someone that did something as simple as being a friend in a time of need. A hero is an individual that is brave, bold, and selfless. Heroes are everywhere.…
