The Wiz takes place on Saturday, February 10th at the Golden Gate Theater. After beginning their tour in Baltimore in late September, the musical cast still had a lot of passion and energy. Going to see The Wiz was a great experience with a lively crowd and a vibrant cast. The Wiz is a revival of the Broadway musical and influenced by The Wiz the movie (1987), responding to The Wizard of Oz. The Golden Gate Theater in downtown San Francisco is a large venue seating over 2000 people with balcony and orchestra seating. In the audience everyone was very lively, no performance went without loud applause, and no joke wasn’t laughed at. With every city that this show made a stop at, they brought in a local celebrity, for San Francisco it was Wayne Brady. At the end of the performance, when actors were being credited, everyone in the audience was standing up, clapping, and dancing to the music playing in the background. This performance was well thought out and an overall good experience, I didn’t expect as much as I received but I was not disappointed. The idea of having a show with all black people about black people is an impactful idea, including this part of the show from The Wiz, the movie was a strong

All I can say is, the story had somewhat of a quicker pace and sometimes harder to follow and small details could easily be missed, and the lighting was a tiny bit distracting when it flashed across the stage quickly. The use of sound effects was used to signify different things that caught the attention of the viewers and really added a special touch to the play. The play showcased beautiful and stunning singing which made the play more authentic, combined with the elaborate dances numbers truly made the show breathtaking and…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

The actors all looked so happy and the fact that it was live was better. Another favorite part of mine was the dance competition. Everyone dancing and having a good time with each other rather than caring about the contest just made it a delightful scene to watch. There was so much energy and I could tell all the actors loved singing and dancing. However, when Danny starts to dance with Cha Cha although, it was not Sandy I still enjoyed their finale.…

Each actor played a character who was someone they weren’t and it was clear they were out of their comfort zone but they still managed to make their characters believable and entertaining for the audience. The actors used as much space as they could on set which made the play more enjoyable as there was always movement on one side of the stage. With hilarious yet simple comedy used perfectly, the audience was kept interested and laughing while on their toes waiting to find out what would happen next.…

Students filed into the band room in clusters at a time, shoving past one another to get ready. Those that were able to race their way down from their last class made sure to get the nicest, most stable stands, while those staggering in from the other end of the school had to search through for the one that wouldn’t drop their music onto the floor. To combat the winter air outside, the heat had been turned up to an uncomfortable level. As we waited longer and longer for rehearsal to start, the sound in the room became increasingly chaotic. Everytime another student got their hands on an instrument, the music - if you could even call it that - coming through added to the nonsense.…

The set was really helpful to the audience to remind us of each of the character’s stories. Most of the characters, if not all of them, had no names, but each had a certain specific area on stage that they always came back to and it made it easy to recognize them. I heard about the incestuous brother and sister before I went to see the show, but I was still surprised to see their interactions on stage, and it’s not like they were overly sexual with each other but the slightest things or words just triggered that reaction in the audience where everybody cringed a little.
