Reflection essay #4 Our discussion about relationship between creativity and spatial reasoning reminds me of a study of “Mozart effect” (Rauscher et al. 1993), which showing that music by Mozart can temporary improves experimental subjects’ spatial reasoning ability comparing to the control group. Of course, the study is not promoting Mozart’s work. Some recent work shows that the music with seizure frequencies close to the working frequencies of brain can help with stimulating brain activity. When we were talking about students who can play music instrument, I also recalled how I remember all the guitar chords in mind. The transformation from music on paper to music in reality is fascinating. When I was reading the chords, I imagine where the position is on the guitar, and can even hear how it should be sounds like. During the memory training class, the teacher also talks about the effect of music on memory ability. Regarding to this, I think it is because the frequent repetition of melody helps the process of storing information into the rooms in mind palace (if you have one). I used to do paper cuttings (normally it would be from magazines, newspapers, or flyer) when I need to memorize something. Interestingly, when I recite the information, I can remember the paper piece that I was cutting. It shows that my memories were linked to those paper pieces. The memory-training teacher said we all need indexes for our memory, like the keys for the rooms in your mind palace. So when you want to retrieve the memory, you just need the keys. I think this is an important evidence that shows the power of spatial reasoning ability. Back to the relationship between creativity (the ones those can be taught) and spatial reasoning. Spatial reasoning is heavily used in nowadays teaching. Like the molecular model kit for chem classes, the human body models for bio classes, we have seen many models designed with educational propose. Those models help student to transfer the abstract knowledge into a touchable, concrete images, which are easy to be comprehended and remembered. So spatial reasoning ability helps us to gain segments for produce actually knowledge and creativity products, like bricks for building houses. A simple example would be building bricks for kids. By playing bricks with different shapes, kids would know it is not stable (possible) to put a ball on the cone. In the …show more content…
As you said in class, we have to measure it. When we are talking about the kind of creativity that can be taught, it is actually the kind of creativity that use reverse thinking for me. For example, we know what a normal alarm clock’s appearance and functionalities, then we think other than those properties as long as it is still an alarm clock. The normal alarm clock makes noise to wake you up, and then we use vibration instead. Being creativity, in this case, is making new ideas and designs in the way that different from others. On the other hand, the existing measuring methods could be the reason of gradual disappearance of creativity, since there is a fixed standard noting whether you pass or not. Schools have a lot of resources comparing to home-schooling families. But their children seems to have a better performance on this creative aspect. In higher level education, we may gain experience from home-schooling when designing engineering course for college
