Reflection On Social Justice 101

Improved Essays
Let me start this paper by saying thank you. You have a led a class in which in my opinion, was the best dialogue I have ever seen in my life took place. Let me start by saying I was very fearful of taking this class. I wanted to take a class that would not be hard, but instead I would be able to take something from that I could use after graduation. I felt that social justice 101 could do just that for me. However, taking this class did come with a lot of fear like I said. I knew that when I enrolled in this class, I would be the odd one out. I felt like every class I would be walking into a lion's den. I have attended a university where I have been academically and personally criticized for not agreeing with my fellow students and professors. …show more content…
I do not want you to think I am typing this because I am trying to suck up to you. I am in no way fearful of failing a 101 class as a graduating senior and don't really feel like you would do that to me anyway. “Sucking up” is not the purpose of me typing this. I considered sending you this in an email after grades were in so you would know that I was genuine about what I was saying. The problem with teaching, and this happens in my field of law enforcement too, is the good employees don't get thanked. Just as good cops rarely receive a thank you I never see good teachers getting a thank you and when it comes to social justice, I think you need a thank you. So after seeing the template for this final exam I figured this was a good place to put it and to just give a few examples on why I am thankful. This class was lead fair, and was also very helpful. We were able to have many conversations as a class and I have personally learned so much that I can use in my field. So many of my stereotypes about social justice were gone and for the first time in my 21 years of living, I had actually decent conversations about social justice issues in which I could talk to someone who did not agree with me and just teach each other about both sides. My goals were met for this class, and I have not criticism to give. Thank you, and you do a very good job at what you do. I do not think anything in this class needs to be

In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…

So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…

Entry 1 I am nervous and excited for this class. I want to know and understand the systemic oppression people of color face, but I am afraid, and embarrassed, that I know so little in the first place. The only background I have for this course is that I live in America and I read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. She argues mass incarceration is the new Jim Crow. Alexander’s book was so shocking to me that I just wanted to know more, like what the social implication are of this type of oppression.…

Do not judge a book by its cover. Nearly everyone has heard that quote multiple times. “Leaning In: A Student’s Guide to Engaging Constructively with Social Justice Content” by Robin DiAngelo and Özlem Sensoy which appeared in a 2009 issue of Radical Pedagogy. In this article, DiAngelo and Sensoy inform students about the possible difficulties that can arise in an academic social justice course, and steps a student should take in to achieve in the course to gain a higher understanding of the material. DiAngelo and Sensoy tells us that it can be difficult for students to accept and understand concepts that challenge their world view. DiAngelo and Sensoy suggest that this is because students are uninformed and have strong opinions about the topics discussed within a social justice course. Never the less, it is not impossible for…

For me, coming from a rural town in Pennsylvania, I was not even aware of some of the issues that I was presented with. I did not know about Robert Moses or white privilege, or even about how hard it is to live decently on minimum wage. So, I think that the most important thing to convey to students is that there are issues that they may not be aware of and that it is important to spread awareness. Besides focusing on specific and relevant social justice issues, I think that it is also important to convey to students the ways that a person can combat these social justice issues so that they themselves can take the next steps to combating them and helping the…
