Reconstruction: The Effect Of Reconstruction On The Former Slaves

Decent Essays
The effect on Reconstruction on the former slaves was bad and they were treated the same as when they were slaves. They were not better off after the Civil war because of Sharecropping and Black Codes. Sharecropping was when a slave decided they would stay at their owner's house but they had to pay rent with their own food, so when the people had asked too high they would be in debt and were not allowed to leave until they paid it back. The Owner’s then had them work in the fields to help with the debt. This did not benefit the slaves at all because the now free slaves Black Codes was when the white people still treated the former slaves as if they were animals who had no equal rights. They couldn’t own a firearm, eat at the same restaurants,

Reconstruction Plan On may 9,1865, soldiers began packing up and going back home, from the bloodiest war in American history, however when some confederate soldiers came back to the south they were surprised to find that their home had been completely destroyed and in ruins. To fix the south we need to abolish slavery and any form or type of slave labor, build schools in the south that are not separated, and shutdown prejudice groups like the ‘KKK’. This is a very important matter because the south needs help on improving its economy and improving itself in general. If we want to make any sort of progression, the first precaution we have to take is abolishing slavery and any form or type of slave labor.…

The Reconstruction was a success at the beginning by adding the three new amendments, but it failed after that because the rules weren't strong enough to protect the former slaves from the white farmers. It didn't help the slaves to get equal rights like everyone including education, jobs and economic equality. At this point slaves were already free, but they weren't accepted in the society. The Reconstruction wasn't strong enough to deliver how important and big the problem was and that's why it failed. The official establishment and national endorsement of biracial local governments had a tremendous influence on black Southerners, many of who had just been freed from the confines of slavery. For some, just the existence of white Republican authority figures that were sympathetic to their plight made all the difference. Others were inspired to run for office and become activists themselves, even at great risk to their safety (Foner 161). But not every African American felt that Radical Reconstruction was a success: Frederick Douglass opined in his 1881 autobiography that the “experiment in equality had failed” (Gray 73), declaring that while blacks were legally free, they were “still the slave of society, economics, and prejudice” (Gray 74).…

It made it easier to kill and punish the slaves however they felt like it because they knew that they would be refunded for it and they wouldn’t be held responsible for the act. The laws gradually made it impossible to have an interracial relationship. At first it was just fines, and then it went to prison time, and making the children suffer also. Whether enslaved or free, these laws limited the Africans from being with who they want and made it extremely difficult for the free or enslaved Africans to…

Sabeena Jagdeo Reconstruction in the South has Failed “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery” -W.E.B. Dubois. Reconstruction of the south seemed to help the southern society greatly in creating a equal environment for slaves, but in reality, all it did was make the world believe that slaves were free from their landowners. The reconstruction freed slaves from the obligation of working under the whites, but they were still forced to do so, in order to survive. The reconstruction failed because it only made slaves free from slavery, but did not make them entirely free of oppression from the whites, as Dubois suggested. They were still inferior to whites, and only gained freedom for a short period.…
