After going over Reading 4,5,17 and 18 their significance in the psychology field and real world are unbelievably important and necessary to understand different aspects. With Reading 4 and 5 both revolving around perception and the usage of infants in their experiments they’re importance goes into further detail in understanding perception in infants. However, although Readings 17 and 18 are in different chapters they coincide with cognitive development and emotions ultimately dealing with human development. With Reading 4 ultimately in connection with the nature nurture debate, Gibson and Walk conclusively took a “nativist” position. With both researchers desiring to study the visual ability of depth perception scientifically they used a visual cliff. With a visual cliff, appearing as a drop-off Gibson and Walk worked around it with no drop-off actually existing. Testing 36 infants 6-14 months old they also used their mothers to see if they would crawl to the visual drop-off, however, unlike animals who actually perceived the cliff the infants didn’t. Like Fantz Harlow also performs pervious experiments only to change his perspective and experiment to answer his hypothesis. With his idea dealing with a monkey’s basic need for something as a safe haven he uses creates a cloth and wire mother with both providing nutrition and their sense of touch the only difference. Using a strange-situation and open-field test monkeys conclusively favored the cloth mother, although at one point of the experiment she did not provide milk.
