Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to observe a child between the ages of 2-16, while reviewing which stages of development they are in. By observing the child it helps retain information correlating with the class by having to go back and remember what was discussed. Understanding development is important because then you are aware which stages a child should be in. Learning all of this will come in handy if the decision is made to have children someday. You will know how far along your child should be or if they happen to be falling behind.

Such as running, jumping, and climbing, etc. According to the book Life Span Development: A Topical Approach “The child should be able to walk down a long staircase, with some assistance. Also have some control in starting, stopping, and turning. Lastly, the length of their jump increases to 24-33 inches” (Feldman 104). Ariel loved to run, she would constantly have my chase her and try and catch her. Every so often she would stumble a bit, tripping over her feet, but still continuing to run. A few times she would also say “watch how high I can jump!” then proceed to jump off the ledge of the sandbox. From what I observed she did not go very high, more of just a little bunny hop. This being said I do not think Ariel is up to her full potential in the motor development category as she possible could be. As for health and nutrition, the food served at Vita Kids is all natural and organic, seeing they are a part of an all-natural organic vitamin company. What was being served at lunch was cubed strawberries, applesauce, and wheat biscuits with gravy sandwiches, and on the insides of the sandwiches’ were carrots peas and chicken. So basically a healthy chicken pot-pie sandwich. Served with a small glass of milk. Out of all of the children eating lunch, Ariel was the only child to take a spoonful of each fruit, and to eat her sandwich. All the other children either took one little cube of strawberry or did not even take a bite of their sandwich. As for cognitive development, Ariel is in the Preoperational stage. From what we learned, Ariel seems to be up to where she needs to be. She especially excels in pretend play. Ariel asked if we could pretend to be mermaids in an underwater palace, where she was the mommy mermaid and I was the big sister mermaid. Also, that day the children were allowed to wear
