Quinn Zinkievich

You might have seen him walking around the University at Albany campus. His long hair, his lanky build, and his nonchalant demeanor might have caught your eye as you walk to class. You might have brushed him off as a “hipster” or just a strange individual that isn’t worth your time to stop and say hello. Well I sat down with this man, Quinn Zinkievich, and talked about who he is. Though only 21-years-old, Quinn has traveled the world visiting nine different countries including Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, China, Indonesia, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. He has traveled out of curiosity, vacation, and even for job opportunities. My sit down with Quinn showed me that one shouldn’t judge off appearance, because if given a chance that person may surprise you. In a simple way, Quinn is a traveler. He loves to travel to new places and familiar places. I ask why he travels to non-first world countries. “It’s expensive to travel to those countries. When I plan a trip, I like to get the most for my dollar. I don’t want to go somewhere for a week. if I’m spending $1,000 I want to be there for more than five days,” explained Quinn. When traveling, Quinn doesn’t stay at hotels or motels like most travelers. Instead he stays at hostels which are inexpensive food and lodging establishment, similar to a bed and breakfast. Quinn said he has paid as little as $3 a night in some hostels. I looked up hostel prices hostelz.com and was floored by the results. …show more content…
Out of 42,512 hostels in 115 countries, the average price per night was $4.18 per night. For that price, it makes sense why Quinn spoke so highly about them when talking about his travels.
Though most of Quinn’s travels were for fun, one location was for work. During the summer of 2015, Quinn was accepted to an internship to be part of a film crew in South Africa. He traveled to the city of Mossel Bay to work with marina scientist, Ryan Johnson for his upcoming film, “Sharkville” which was a documentary about Great White Sharks living in the bay. I visited Ryan Johnson’s person website page for information on how to obtain an internship. He had a short paragraph about helping students realize their dreams in documentary film study.
“If you are on this path, then my biggest recommendation, apart from studying hard at university, would be to gain as much real world experience as possible (learning how to change spark plugs, spending time on the ocean etc.). If you are at this stage, then I would invite you to join my team as member of one of our ongoing internship programs. Each of my partner companies (Oceans Research, Blue Wilderness and Africa Media) run select internship, volunteer, training programs) Determine your passion and realise your dreams!” I asked Quinn if this is the field of work he would like to go into. His answer was a simple no, but he enjoyed the time and work experience in South Africa. As my time with Quinn wrapped up I had one last question. Where is his dream trip? “Chile is probably number one on my list, and Vietnam is a close second. It’s a dream of mine. I love Latin America, but I also love mountains. Western America

In the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, Ishmael talks about how the world came to be. “A story is a scenario interrelating man, the world, and the gods” (Quinn 41). He described two groups of people, the Leavers and the Takers. The leavers are the early humans who hunted and gathered their food, the Takers are the modern day humans who use up resources to survive. The Takers call themselves civilized and the Leavers primitive because they believe that their way of living is how humans were meant to live.…

Have you ever wondered why the modern world is so unequal? Why the United States is so technologically advanced while places like Papua New Guinea and places in Africa still rely on a hunter-gatherer way of life? Jared Diamond contemplates these questions through his exploration of geographic luck and evaluation of the first development of guns, germs, and steel. Among the various contributors to the initial progression of growing nations (and guns, germs, and steel) include: the cultivation of wheat, smallpox and malaria resistance, general continent shape and location, as well as the development of writing. Cultivation of wheat led those in the fertile crescent to surpass others who didn’t have the advantage of hearty grain to keep them…

From the first moment an infant’s eyes open, their parents are influencing them. Colloquialisms, manners, identification characteristics, subconscious tendencies, can all be traced back somewhere to an encounter or example taken from the parent sometime in a life. It is when nearing adolescence that these influences begin to be questioned and analyzed. This principle is prevalent in both Geoffrey Wolff’s The Duke of Deception and Tobias Wolff…

Anthony Stokes, a previously healthy 15-year old boy, was denied a heart transplant by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston in 2013 causing a great deal of discussion and controversy. According to the hospital, they follow a strict set of guidelines in order to decide who in their care receives a transplant of any sort and Stokes did not fit those guidelines due to his history of noncompliance, although they did not specify further on their guidelines it seemed their main concern was that Stokes would not be through in taking his medicine, which he would have to to for the rest of his life in order for his body to not reject his heart, and go to his follow up appointments to ensure everything went and is going well in his body. However, according to Stokes’ mother her son was judged on “tattoos and an ankle bracelet” making it a case of prejudice instead of simply a sad outcome which any other patient could have also received. The story took to the internet, where we know a variety of uneducated and easily persuaded people often spend their time, and people were incredibly upset. The anger from the people was seemingly only because a young boy was being denied a heart, but there is more to it and we can’t deny it, and part of that would be race.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology.
