The 3 Most Important Skills Every Great Lacrosse Player Needs

There are countless talented and famous lacrosse players, but truly great players are rare at best. These great lacrosse players, use their natural talents to help them master three qualities that transform them from good to great. Many aspects affect the quality of a lacrosse player, but the three most important are his mental skills, stick skills, and athleticism.

All great lacrosse players have astounding mental skills. Their dedication, passion, sportsmanship, situational awareness, and team chemistry is extremely strong and developed. They need to have thick skin and be able to get checked and take a beating.

They need to be durable and well built and they must be able to run consistently fast for extended periods of time. Endurance! Endurance! Endurance! A great lacrosse player has the ability to accelerate quickly. They need to be able to scoop up a ground ball or juke past an opposing player then accelerate past them to take a shot on goal. All players need strength in order to be able to drive, check, and defend. Sports Fitness Advisor states, “Lacrosse players require a high body weight to cope with the aggressive physical contact in the game. A defenseman on the other hand, needs to be able to check and block effectively, in order to protect the goal. Youthletic.com states “Lacrosse players need to make short, quick lateral, forward and backward movements, making footwork an important skill.” Foot skills and agility are a must in lacrosse. You can’t always outrun your opponent but if you are agile you can easily juke them, then run past them. A great player needs to be balanced …show more content…
They have mastered mental skills, stick skills, and athleticism in order to make the transition from good to great. When they get on the field, they play all out. When they get knocked down, they get up. When they get checked, they check back harder. When they miss a shot, they chase it. When they get scored on, they return that goal with two on their opponent. They never give up. They can run, dodge, check, and defend effectively. A truly great lacrosse player will never admit that he is great. But instead he will be humble on and off the field. These players will forever be remembered. What will you be, good or great? Fall ball is a great opportunity for lacrosse coaching staffs to assess their team's strengths and weaknesses and see which underclassmen are ready to take on a bigger role.
