The question addressed in the article is as follows: "How do undergraduate nursing students perceive their experiences of the transition into higher education and nursing profession (Porteous & Machin, 2017)?" Research questions in qualitative research are linked to paradigms and research traditions within paradigms (Polit & Beck, 2017). Porteous and Machin's research was conducted using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach (Porteous & Machin, 2017). Hermeneutics is a research tradition in qualitative research, which focuses on the lived experiences of humans and how they interpret them (Polit & Beck, 2017). This research is closely linked to the constructivist paradigm where old ideas and structures are broken down and put back together in new ways (Polit & Beck, 2017).
