According to Merriam-Webster, Puppetry is the skill or activity of using puppets in performances. Not many peoples first thoughts when they hear of plays in the area think of puppetry, but it happens to be one of the oldest forms of art and is also still practiced around the world. In my opinion I would not want to sit in a theatre and watch a bunch of puppets because my first though of puppets are people holding things over there hands or people hidden behind a curtain with only the puppet showing, but as I have watched these two plays War House and Hand to God on youtube, it may be something I am actually interested in going to watch. These plays use a different form of puppetry. War House and Hand to God were both plays that used puppetry. …show more content…
A few types of Puppetry are Marionettes which are usually carved of wood and moved with strings. Hand Puppets which are made to cover the whole hand and half the arm. Rod Puppets which are made by using a center rod through the puppet, and Shadow puppets which casts a shadow when the puppeteer maneuvers the puppet in the lighting. A puppeteer is a human who is controlling the puppet and can be hidden or visible to the audience. Puppets can chase each other around, talk or be silent and by the end of the play revele a powerful message. War Horse was originally a children's book written by Michael Morpurgo. After War Horse was written, a man named Tom Morris who worked at Handspring Puppet Company in London had heard about this book and wanted to make this book into a play but using puppets. Michael was not thrilled with this idea but decided to try it out. He was asked to come to London to meet Tom and quit possibly figure out how to put a puppet horse on stage. War Horse is very powerful, showing the relationship between a horse and his owner during World War I. Albert and his horse Joey live on a farm in the British countryside and during the World War I outbreak, Alberts dad sells his horse to the british cavalry. Albert goes on one hell of an adventure to find Joey and bring him back. He enters a journey filled with many emotions and doesn't quite know where he is going. But he will do everything he can to bring Joey back. Many say this play is told by the horse. After this play failing many times, on Press night Michael finally realized what was missing to complete this play. Morpurgo stated by the end of the night as the audience stood up cheering with tears running down there face, “War Horse belongs with me, not to me: it belongs to everyone else now”. With this play being Morpurgo includded animals not because he likes them, but because of how humans interact with animals and how animals interact with humans. With that being
