Track and field is a sport consisted of running, throwing, and jumping. Track and field was first recorded in Olympia, Greece at the Ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC (1). Yet track and field first began when cave dwellers chased a deer, jumping over logs and other obstacles, and throwing rocks and spears trying to capture their prey (Marx 3). The Greeks made the idea that track had a great influence on physical and mental health, which is what makes it so popular today (Marx 3). In the past track and field was for men only, but since then it has changed and everyone can participate in track and field no matter what their race, sex, or body size consists of (Marx 3).
Every year there are many different track and field events held all across the country (Marx 3). There are some events for long-distance runners of all ages to different walks of life to participate in (Marx 3). Some of the most known and largest track and field events are the Boston Marathon and the Portland’s Cascade Run-Off (Marx 3). Most people who enter to participate in these races train on their own all the time trying to push themselves to do better (Marx 3). Marathons also help to demonstrate the wide popularity of track and field (Marx 3). Track is meaningful to me because it helps me strive for the greatest and always push myself to do my best. …show more content…

It is also a good thing to compete in to stay healthy and strong.
There are many different ways that math is involved in track and field. Math is used in the racing and training programs of track and field (Linton 2). One way math is used in track and field is so that the runners pace themselves in their event (Linton 2). The runners need to learn how to pace themselves based on the event they are running so that they do not start off too fast and then have a slow finish (Linton 2). If runners would pace themselves right in the different events they were in they would have a good chance at succeeding in the event. Another reason math is used in track and field is to calculate session speeds (Linton 2). When runners time themselves to run a race it helps them to push harder and try to beat that time the next time they run that event (Linton 2). They also calculate their session speeds during training to understand how fast they are supposed to go and how hard they need to push themselves (Linton 2). Calculating the session speeds is very important to be able to beat your personal records and also to beat your competitors at the meet. Math is also used in track and field to make allowance for conditions on the track (Linton 2). It helps to show how fast you need to run with the different weather conditions (Linton 2). It helps to show you how to pace yourself from the air resistance (Linton 2). It also shows you how to pace yourself in different weather conditions (Linton 2). Math is used for shot put and discus to measure how far you threw in meters (Price 4). It is also used to measure how high you jumped when you jump in high jump (Price 4). Math is also used to measure how far or long you jumped in long jump (Price 4). They use math to measure how high you pole vault in pole vault too (Price 4). Those are only some of the field events they use math in to measure for, but there are also a few more. Another way to relate math to track and field is by taking the amount of meters you have to run into consideration and calculating the distance until you are completed in the running event (Price 4).
