A multitude of romantic comedies, and different topics and points of views were presented throughout this semester. Pride and Prejudice, It Happened One Night, and When Harry Met Sally were all romantic comedies that had a substantial amount of influence over my views. Going into this semester, I had a distinctly different set of viewpoints when it came to romantic love as I do now. Challenges, issues, and my own personal experiences all contributed to the formations of a new set of beliefs. Over the course of the semester, my view on romantic love has changed drastically due to obstacles guiding couples into stronger relationships, the prejudice present in opposing class systems, and the complication of friendship in men and women.

As someone who previously believed that romantic feelings rarely got in the way of friendship, my view changed when we studied Harry and Sally’s relationship. From the beginning, the idea that men and women cannot be friends became apparent when Harry stated “what I'm saying is - and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form - is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way (Ephron, 1989).” My previous views were supported when Harry and Sally maintained an amazing friendship for quite a long time, but I surprised myself when I rooted for them to fall in love. Studying this film forced me to reflect upon past friendships, and I realized that many of my own opposite-sex friendships, and friendships between male and female friends of mine, ended because of a romantic feeling between either party. After this self-reflection, I believe that friendship between men and women can easily be complicated and feelings of love can easily make or break a

In today’s world, the genre of romance has a very different connotation than it did over 150 years ago. Nowadays, romance novels are typically about two people falling in love and living happily-ever-after. However, in the beginning to mid 1800’s, the idea of Romance didn’t have much to do with relationships. The era of Romanticism was one that was marked by a strong contrast against the ideals of the more scientific Enlightenment that had occurred some years previously. It is in this period that many famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more first made their presence known as serious American authors.…

Many people assume that their perspective of the world, specifically about love, is that it is straightforward and simple, and that everyone gets a fairytale ending. However, that is not always the case, and usually never is. As seen in pieces like Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and “When Love Arrives” by Sarah Kay & Phil Kaye, it shows that love is unpredictable, complex, and involves varying levels of emotion. Brave New World and “When Love Arrives” both display perspectives of love being erratic.…

The film touched on the nature of cross-sex friendships, self-disclosure as a means of creating intimacy, and the relational escalation and de-escalation that occurs within relationships. The film enables one to consider and evaluate their own friendships and relationships when regarding the question, can men and women be friends? Although Harry and Sally eventually get married, it is possible for men and women to be friends, it just might be challenging at first but it is up to the friends at hand to decide in what direction they would like to move their friendship. Should they increase intimacy by self-disclosing more or should they deescalate their relationships? These questions are difficult to answer as sometimes it is unclear in which path we want to take our relationships, as it was in Harry and Sally’s predicament.…

Romeo and Juliet. Star-crossed lovers whose relationship never stands up to the test of time, but is it possible that Shakespeare’s play is more than just a passion fuelled story of love? Being over 421 years old you wouldn’t think that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet poses any relevance to our modern society, but by stripping the play down to its core you can see it’s blatantly obvious theme of love. The theme seems to have numerous ties to our contemporary civilization, such as the social issues surrounding forced marriage, and the use of Shakespeare’s archetypal characters in modern films and novels. Perhaps one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, Romeo and Juliet is based predominately around the theme of love.…

As I sat curled up in an oversized pine-green sweater at the circular table closest to the cafeteria door, comparing history test results with my friends and watching the daily lunchroom chaos, I was dumbfounded at the affection various couples were showing to one another. To my left, a short girl with glowing cinnamon hair was holding hands with a tall boy sporting a Nike sweatshirt and a piercing jawline. To my right, two students with long, ebony hair were sitting at their own table as they made out. While most people would be disgusted at these public displays of affection, also known as PDA, as a nosey hopeless romantic, I was enthralled that I was able to witness the fondness that was occurring between two people, finding love in a world so full of hate.…

Love is often represented in romance films and literature as an everlasting adoration that never falters nor fades. However, Shakespeare suggests the fickle nature of love in his comedy Twelfth Night as numerous characters fall in and out of love, and experience its euphoria and misery. For instance, the lovesick Duke Orsino experiences the elation of love, yet also the loneliness of rejection; Lady Olivia instantly goes from loving grief to pursuing Cesario; and Orsino renounces his love for Olivia in order to marry Viola. Thus, through Shakespeare’s portrayal of character’s attitudes and actions in Twelfth Night, it is undeniable that he is suggesting that love is a source of joy and pain, which results in fickle affections as an attempt…
