All series need romance plot line, whether it be the main character finding the love of his life or a juicy love triangle, a television series nowadays needs a romance to feel complete. Shows like Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and True Blood capitalizes on the average television viewer’s love for romantic plots. Human’s want love and affection, and we want to see our favorite characters receive that from each other. Romantic dramas as a genre provide the excitement we want to see but may not get to experience ourselves. Who doesn’t want a great love with sparks and chemistry like it is shown in media? The prevalence of this subgenre depicts society’s value of love and sex, and their ideas of it.

As long as media shows the importance of romance and as long as society reacts to it, romantic relationships will continue to of highest value. The genre as become a cycle of exaggeration within society and want. These romantic ideas “[Do] not reflect reality; they reflected, rather, the interests of… society” (Maasik, Solomon 11). And thus, there will always be a romantic subplot in films and television.
Grey’s Anatomy
Grey’s Anatomy is one of the biggest shows on television. The series follows the life of Meredith Grey and her fellow surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital. Grey’s Anatomy has garnered attention for being risqué, dramatic and glamourizing doctors. Grey’s Anatomy represents what society wants to see: sex, love and drama. Although Grey’s Anatomy perfectly encompasses the romantic genre, there is more to the show.
The audience is intended to be adult women. The opening credits depicts women wearing nail polish, heels, and a dress under her scrubs. The main character, Meredith, is a beautiful woman in her mid-20s with a steamy sex life, while avoiding being sexualized. Despite the main character’s background, she lives fulfilling life with a love interest and a good career that the female audience is attracted to. She also has plenty of male suitors. Meredith acts as the ideal woman, despite her flaws. This show just attracts
