Divisions in social institutions caused by an allen power/money as seen through LOTF, use of fire and food.
Intro:
Conflict in social institutions are caused by access to resources which is the source of power on the island.
According to dictionary.com the term power is used to describe someone in control over others or someone who has authority over another (Dictionary.com). An example of Power over others can be clearly seen in the first chapter of Lord of the Flies. After all the boys had been gathered up and no one knew what to do Ralph said “seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things” (Golding 20). In Lord of the Flies the boys used fire for many purposes. Ralph use the fire as a way to Signal passing ships in order to be rescued. Jack used fire to cook the meat of the pigs that him and his Hunters would go out and kill. Fire had an exponential growth throughout the story for an indication of power. another dominant indicator of power was the conch. In Lord of the Flies, like the fire, the conch had several uses. Its first purpose was to send out a signal to all the boys on the island indicating that there will be a meeting. at these meetings the boys would discuss things like rules, jobs, and give updates. Each group of boys would take turns giving updates and in order to speak a boy needed to have the Conch. The shell was used as an indicator to show who could talk without this rule in place all of them would attempt to talk at once, and nothing would get done. Unfortunately the punch had an exponentially decaying indication of power as the boys slowly stopped caring about the
