Positive Effects Of Health Care Migration

Looking at the effects of migration of health care practitioners there are both positive and negative aspects. It is of important essence to look at those aspects from three different perspectives; the perspective of the individual, the perspective of the source country and the one of the recipient country. The increased salary is definitely a great benefit to migrant healthcare practitioners. However, the period of adjustment to the new work environment is challenging due to language and cultural differences for the individual that has been trained in a different educational/work environment. Additionally, challenges appear when trying to form work relationships with other healthcare colleagues. Impaired work relationships lead to frustration, isolation, psychological distress and depression. When looking at the effect of health care migration from the source country perspective, the amount of money sent abroad from healthcare workers to their home countries reaches the amount of $70 billion dollars according to the WHO estimation, which is money not reinvested back to the healthcare system.
