Porbeagle Shark Essay

Decent Essays
The main threat to the porbeagle shark is over-exploitation in target and bycatch fisheries. Both catch juvenile and adult sharks of all different life stages when there is no management involved. Porbeagle shark is a valuable secondary catch in many fisheries, in particular for longline fisheries for tuna and swordfish, but also gill nets, driftnets, trawls and handlines can trap a porbeagle shark. Between 2009 and 2010, the highest porbeagle catches were made by France (305 tonnes, 9 tonnes), Spain (239 tonnes, 70 tonnes), Canada (63 tonnes, 83 tonnes) and New Zealand (63 tonnes, 56 tonnes) (FAO-FIGIS, 2012). Although no porbeagle catch data from Japan, Taiwan, China and Korea are available in the reports of FISHSTAT (ICCAT SCRS/ICES, 2009).

The quote above was taken from chapter ten of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, “Lula Stirs Up Trouble (But Doesn’t Mean To,)” where the quote is supposed to represent how Travis, Lamar and, Sam Houston are trying to win the affections of Lula Gates. Travis, Lamar and, Sam Houston the whole chapter are, “Displaying their gorgeous plumage and performing strange antics before the females,” A.K.A. Lula trying to get her to pay more attention to them and eliminate the other brothers as possible suitors. Shark fishing has become even more popular. However the decline in the populations has brought some concern, from the over fishing. With so many people going out and fishing for sharks, there doesn’t seem to be a way for sharks to recover their numbers in time with the rise of fishing. Population numbers were at alarming low, but as of recent years, the population has slowly been recovering, especially off of the east coast. The NOAA( National Oceanic And Atmoshereic Administration) had this to say on the matter recently, "We've seen an increase in the number of sharks in every survey since 2001; that reflects management efforts to conserve the populations of various shark species.”…

Science Paper Marine biologists study the behaviors of all marine organisms. They also have a lot of knowledge on all marine organisms. However, everything there is to know about the carnivorous great white sharks’ species hasn’t been discovered yet. Scientists can only do so much with these organisms in a controlled environment (or captivity) before an incident occurs where the shark either dies or puts others in danger. Erik Vance’s article, “Why Great White Sharks Are Still a Mystery to Us” provides examples of instances where great whites were put in captivity: “They refuse to live behind glass—in captivity some have starved themselves or slammed their heads against walls.…

Shark finning has been a worldwide issue. Approximately 73 million sharks are killed each year solely for their fins. But this number does not include the number of sharks that are killed for reasons other than finning (Raloff). China and Hong Kong are the largest importers for shark fins due to China’s cultural tradition for Shark Fin Soup (“How Many Sharks Are Killed Each Year For Their Fins?”). Shark Fin Soup was introduced into Chinese cuisine during the Sung Dynasty (AD 960–1279) but did not become incorporated into the Chinese tradition until the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368–1644) (“The End of The Line?”).…

As fishermen are doing their jobs, the shark population is dropping catastrophically. The environmental engineer and writer of Scientific and Educational Publications talked about the shark numbers in the ocean and that the “populations of dusky, oceanic whitetip, and silky sharks in the Gulf of Mexico have declined by 79% to 97% since the 1950s due to overfishing. Massive declines are also reported over the same time period for blue, mako, oceanic whitetip, silky, and thresher sharks in the tropical Pacific Ocean” (“Threats to Aquatic Environments”).
