I was working in the roll call/ training office. I was able to get to know the work life of a police officer from beginning to end. I was making their daily tour schedules and notifications. Here I was have conversations about current events on police brutality. Officers had their own opinion on the case. Working there I was able to come to my own continues on what is the problem behind all of this.
Officer’s opinion. When speak to officers a lot of them told that there were multiple reasons behind all these accords. Many believe that it was a lack of supervision. I learned that to every four rookie on patrol, there should be one lieutenant or sergeant supervising. But, there isn’t enough Lieutenants or Sergeants to conduct supervision. So rookies were sent out on patrol in pairs of two, with just 6 months of training. Another reason was the lack of training, many polices officers already on the job informed me that they didn’t feel completely prepare for the job after training. Some stated that training needs to cover more topics and include more hands on exercises. My opinion. While work in roll call/ training I realized that my precinct had a lack of officers. One morning I was preparing the daily roll call, when I realized I didn’t have enough officers to pair up and send on patrol. I ask my co-worker, who told me that this had been a problem for year now. How can a precinct that need a total of 240 officers, function with just 125 officers? Half of the officers were rookies to begin with, which can’t go out without supervision. The lack of
