Point Loma High School, a school known for its outgoing students, winning sports teams, and it’s legacy of academic integrity, but is this school really all that it is cracked up to be? In a recent survey among the freshman class of 2019, over 50% of the students admitted to cheating on an assignment or test in the past 12 months. So why do students cheat? That is the same question many teachers and staff ask themselves on a daily basis all over the world. The teachers at Point Loma High School decided to stop pondering the topic, and start doing something about it. They conducted a campus wide survey on the subject of cheating for the freshman english classes to take in order to see if they could find the root of the problem. According to their research, over half of the class of 2019 at PLHS has cheated on an assignment or homework in the past year. The amount of students that commit to the academic injustice known as cheating is a real problem at Point Loma High School. After reviewing the Academic Honesty Survey’s results, it is clear to see that many students are unaware of what constitutes as cheating. Of course the obvious stereotypical way of cheating, looking at someone’s paper and copying the answers, isn’t fair, but what about being absent on the day of the test just so you could have more time to study? Near 60% of students who took this survey said that this was acceptable, however, that is not the case. In the article, “How Will Cheating in School Affect the Rest of Your Life,” Christopher Cascio claims that students cheat because they don’t understand the material taught, or because of the simple fact that their peers do it. Cascio explains his thoughts when he says “you might begin to question why you put forth full effort while others simply cheat and achieve the same academic accomplishments, and so you might begin to cheat as well”. What these students who cheat don’t know, is that cheating is detrimental in the long run because the things you learn in school will help you in the future, and if you cheat while learning those topics you will never be able to fully understand them or apply
