Pig Dissection Lab Report

Once the major veins and arteries of the pig were tested out on, I had to shave the skin off of the back of my pig in order to reveal the spinal cord of my pig. In order to do this, I cut a small slip of flesh off of the pig's back starting from just caudal to the where the pinna attached to the pig's head and ending approximately one centimeter cranial from the tail of the pig. I then began to shave away bits of the muscle on the back of the pig by turning my scalpel at an angle that was slightly downcast, as to allow chunks to be removed at a time without going too deep. Once I got to where the spinal column had a slight brownish tint, I had to use dissection scissors to open the spine up and see the spinal cord. The internal structures …show more content…
The remove the scalp, I had to first cut the skin surrounding the skull cap off by cutting from my previous incision from the spincal cord and working around the head until I came in a full circle and the incision met back up with the starting point. I then pulled the skin away from the skull with little effort by inserting my finger under a small flap of skin on the caudal end of the head and pulling the skin cranially. I then punctured a small hole into the side of the skull using the dissection scissors and carefully slid the dissection scissors into the hole and started cutting the skull in a strait line across the top to the other side. I then slid the dissection scissors under the skull at top and started to cut caudally until the cut was close to the medulla oblongata and looked similar to half of a plus sign. I cut the cranial half of the skull in the same fashion, only stopping where I cut the skin off of the skull. To finish getting the skull off of my pig, I had to use the dissection scissors to cut pieces of the skull out of the four sections of the skull that I had created. I also used the tweezers for this part because they would help hold the pieces in places before they were cut away from the rest of the skull. Once I removed the part of the skull that

Next, cut horizontally through these two holes at the base of the neck, then lift the backstrap and use a knife to scrape along the bone underneath to gather as much meat as possible. Removing the hindquarters, on the other hand, is much easier, especially if there is a table provided. Initiate this process by removing the legs by slicing along the hip and pelvic bones to locate the ball-and-socket joint. Next, insert a knife into the joint to extract the ball from the socket to remove the legs. To separate the silverskin seams between large muscles, start with the knife meat and remove the remainder of the hindquarters with wetted fingertips.…

The sex of pig was able to be determined by checking the urogenital opening. The major difference between male and femal pig is the location of urgenital opening.(Figure 1) If the pig was female, the urogenital opening is probably located next to the anus but my pig was male because the urogenital opening was next to the uimbilical cord. My pig was 29cm and its gestational age was 110 days.…

Bullfrog Dissection Background The American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus, is an amphibian about the size of a teacup.(National Geographic, “American Bullfrog”). This dissection explored the anatomy of a bullfrog that had been pithed. Pithing is a technique used to prevent the frog from experiencing any cruel or unusual pain during the dissection. A pithed frog has had its nervous tissue in its brain severed thus allowing it to maintain normal bodily function during the dissection without having to endure the pain of the dissection.…

Feeder pigs are a lot of work but it all pays off when you eat the pork chops, bacon, and even pork sausage. Feeder pigs are easy to train because they are the 4th smartest animal in the world. Your feeder pigs should be about 250lbs (on average) by 6 months. When you get your feeder pigs they should be eight weeks old when they are born. Make sure when you get your feeder pigs are healthy before you buy them.…

Payton White Professor Hunsaker 3 September 2016 Articles 26 & 27 After analyzing article 26, “Puppies, Pigs, and People: Eating Meat and Marginal Cases” by Alastair Norcross, a couple things become apparent. Such as (only use “such as” if you are continuing the sentence, but not to start a new sentence.) our author opening up his piece with a fictional scenario that seems a tad bit crazy, but serves as a very serious philosophical point. According to our ( it would be best to just say, “the” author instead of “our” author.) author, Norcross sees meat-eaters-at least those who know of the treatment of factory-farmed animals-are completely at fault for the consumption of meat.…

The pelage is found under the chin and the ventral of the snout. The stance of a pig is different to that of a human. Firstly, pigs are unguligrades; they move by walking on the tips of their toes or rather…

The stimulation of Guinea pig ileum when introduced to different concentrations of Acetylcholine simulation Abstract Introduction Bioassays can be a simulated programme or an experiment in a laboratory. They are used as a method to quantify an analyte thereby measuring its effects on different biological systems which are under controlled conditions (Allan Jones, 1998). The simulated programme allows tissues to be measured in response to drugs. Organ baths preserve the live tissue by providing essential nutrients, O2, correct pH, warmth and under a weight to measure changes in the live tissue. Previously and currently bioassays are used in many instances, including measuring plant extracts within a plant,…

In this experiment, a SDS-PAGE gel was used to analyze the protein samples from the MBP-AP and WT-AP experiments. The samples are then referenced to the ladder to determine the molecular weight of the MBP-AP and WT-AP proteins. Then the UV absorbance of the two proteins from 240 nm to 340 nm is determined using a nanovolume cuvette. The absorbance at 280 nm was then used in conjunction with data from previous experiments to determine the concentration of the MBP-AP and WT-AP protein samples. Results of experiments showed that the SDS-PAGE gel yielded expect bands and the approximate molecular weight of wild type alkaline phosphatase and maltose binding protein-alkaline phosphatase is 49 kDa and 95 kDa, respectively.…

The loin primal cut of a pig is the section that runs from the shoulder all the way to the hind legs on either side of the backbone. It is widely considered to hold much of the most tender meat on a pig. Keep in mind that pigs are bred for the length of their loins, which can have as many as 17 ribs. This part of the pig is the source of many of the chops and roasts that you see in grocery store meat sections. Cuts that come from it include boneless chops and country-style…

Another similarity would be how the gastrocnemius, in both the human and fetal pig, connects from the distal end of the femur to the Achilles tendon, and they both provide the same function of flexing the foot (Miller 1998). Overall, because fetal pigs have similar muscles in humans, they are valuable assets, even though some of the locations of the muscles are in different locations and…
