Did we not decide many years ago that men and women were created equal? If that’s the case, why is same sex marriage even an issue? Anyone, men or women, should be able to love and marry whomever they want. Why? Because, whatever goes on between two people shouldn’t matter to an outside source. If men and women are created equal, then their partner or spouse should be just as equal as anyone else. The worldview from when gay marriage was deemed illegal, has completely transformed from then until now. So, it only seems right that people’s mindsets have also changed. The word marriage comes from the Middle English word “mariage.” This word first appeared between 1250-1300 CE. In this definition it explains that marriage is between a man and a women. But, that definition was so many years ago, it only seems fair that we update it and make it more toward the normal of today’s society. We have discovered that people who like others of the same sex actually do not have a mental illness, like it was once thought. And, humans are not the only ones attracted to the same sex, but animals as well. Animals also display tendencies of being attracted to the same sex. I come from a small town, with very narrow minded people. It was hard for me, coming from a family that always encouraged open mindedness, to hear the things people in my community would say towards the idea of same sex marriage. This positive thought process if very important for people of my generation, it shows them that it is okay to go against the norms that they have been taught. For example, we were told in our earlier life that insurance would be too expensive to afford. But, now President Obama has made insurance available for everyone of any income. So, why is this concept not the same for marriage? In early times, same sex marriage in many cultures was not considered taboo. It was encouraged. Throughout history, same sex marriage was not a thought people had in their mind. In ancient Egypt and in some civilizations of Mesopotamia couples of the same sex were recognized by the empire. The Greek’s thought attraction between the same sex was normal and a way of showing love. These early civilizations based love on people’s character, rather than their gender. This negative attitude towards same sex marriage came with the rise in Christiantiy. One of the main arguments against gay marriage is that it goes against individuals beliefs and religion. These religious people believe that a man and women should get married, so that they are able to procreate. If this is the ideal basis for marriage, then why did Jesus and Paul not mention childbearing as a reason for two people to get married? “It is highly significant that Jesus and Paul, while both referring to the creation story, never once mention procreation or physical sexual difference in their teaching about marriage.” (Sullivan, 1997. pg. 79). But, the times have changed and technology has made it capable for these couples to do so. We are raised in a society where having children is the main reason for marriage. Then why is it that same sex marriage couples …show more content…
This denied right of marriage also denies these couples of having social security benefits, disability or retirement of their spouse, tax exemptions, and much more that couples of today 's normal are allowed. There are other emotional things that these couples could face if gay marriage was not legal. Hospitals usually only allow family into the room in a serious situation, so if a couple was not allowed to get married, they now are also not allowed to visit their loved one in the hospital. Other emotional events they could face is dealing with the custody of a child or also making a decision regarding a loved one’s
