The animals that are tested on, live in harsh conditions and put under damaging physical conditions. Dr. Riggins was testing a new medicine that would treat worms found in animals. He gave a dose of that to a group of mice and the,“drug staved off the parasite, but it also did something surprising. Before the mice were treated for pinworms… it had implanted cancer cells into the animals' brains” according to NPR. So, the medicine did what it was intended to do, but it also gave the mice cancer. This medicine ended up hurting the animals which could’ve survived with worms, but now they have died due to the cancer that was injected into their bodies. Then again, Peter Singer has had monkeys captive to test his research. He has hooked monkeys on medications and hooked up to machines to test how their muscles react and hope to eventually give them to humans. John Gluck from the New York times states that Peter has, “kept young, intelligent monkeys separated from their families and other kind for many months in a soundproof cages that remained lit 24 hours a day.” These Monkeys have been living small cages where they cannot move freely. Also, some of them have lost limbs or muscle tissue that was a result due to medicine that they were on. Putting animals through physical and social suffering is unnecessary and a brutal action. Some countries test more animals than others due to the amount of drug or product that they have. The economist says that, “Britain conducts a surprising number of experiments on animals: some 3m a year. America appears to use fewer animals—just 1.1m a year, according to official statistics” not including mice or rats. The U.S does use less animals but they don’t count mice and rats as animals because there is an abundance of them. Britain is smaller than the U.S and tests on possibly more animals which is majority concerning. Large amounts of animals are required to test a variety of products. About 4.5 thousand beauty and personal-care products have been introduced in the last year. Liza Lin from Bloomberg says that, “The Mintel and PETA estimates would translate into more than 300,000 animals used in tests over the past year.” The 300,000 animals are tested on for the safety of humans. Even though testing on animals makes it safer for us to use new products; is it really worth killing hundreds of thousands of
