Personal Narrative: The Rochester Girls Golf Team

Improved Essays
The past six years, the Rochester girls golf team has made it to State and has finished in either 2nd or 3rd place. There has not been a team in the school history to ever win the team title for girls golf. Coach Hill, Coach Mayer, Morgan Savage, Gabby Isaacks, myself and Lindsay Alewelt would tackle Red Tail Run on a cold, windy course to beat the odds given to us on October 16th and 17th. Through trust, hard work, motivation, and a little luck, the 2015 Rochester girls golf team defeated their oppositions and took home a state title. Leaving myself the greatest memory of my High School experience. Before heading straight into the State finals, let me give you a little background on our team and our season heading into State. To start off, …show more content…
The first day of State was miserable. It was cold and super windy. The wind must of been at twenty to twenty-five miles per hour constantly. That was the worst part. Before heading to Red Tail Run, we had breakfast at Mr. Hills house. He had pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy, smoothies and bacon. This is a tradition he does if a team or individual makes it to state. Anyways, after that we rode in blue and smelly van to the course. The whole way up my stomach was twisting and turning like crazy and my head wouldn’t stop thinking of negative thoughts. It’s finally time to start, so I go up to the tee box and hit a perfect drive down the middle. But then came my second shot which fades a little right and almost in the sand, I chip on and then four putt. All I was saying after that hole was “Really you come all the way here to four putt, that's just great Andria.” If that doesn't describe the team's effort that day, I don’t know what does. Fast Forwarding to the end of the day, I shot an 86, Gabby shot an 84, Morgan 78, and Lindsay 99. That meant we were heading into the second day eleven strokes back and in third place. By that point I thought it was over, that it was too much of a deficit to come back to a really well rounded team. On the bus ride home it was quiet and the mood was ......? That’s when Coach Hill says, “Girls, listen, last year the team that won was in the same exact position that we are in

There is a strong belief throughout the locker room that the Huskies are going to come out with a win, but the extra push from Coach Dale might send them into the “big headed” mindset. This is why Dale announces “there's a tradition in tournament play to not talk about the next step until you've climbed the one in front of you. ”(1) If one faces the obstacles in front of them before anything else it seems as if they will go a lot further. It becomes very easy for any athlete to think they will beat their opponent, but it is surprising how many upsets happen in the world of sports.…

I knew it was going to be hard to get hits off of him but I knew we could do it. Our leadoff hitter, Tyson Gordon, took two balls and then found a pitch he liked and sent a hard grounder to shortstop, the shortstop took his time and Tyson beat it out! I was up next and the pitcher caught me off guard with a first pitch curveball. I was out front but managed to get it over the third base line.…

Imagine a rocket, specifically molded, perfectly symmetrical, prepared to do it’s job exactly how it needs to with no room for error. Seems almost perfect, on the other hand we have the Rockets, my AAA hockey team the summer before sixth grade. It was made up of players from the La Crosse area who played and practiced together every summer for the last few years. We weren’t exactly the most organized team in the sense of having professional attitudes. The ceiling at our practice arena had leaks and water would pour out if it was hit with anything.…

We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…

The experience that I went through and that I would like to share was when I played golf in the beginning of the year. I was fine managing my schedule during the first week or two of school, but then I started getting more and more homework as the weeks went on. I had a hard time keeping up with my school work and playing golf. I practiced every day after school and I didn’t really have any time after school to do my homework. Playing golf took up basically all of my time because I played it 5-7 days a week between practicing with the school team or practicing with my golf instructor/coach.…
