Personal Narrative: The New Volleyball Team

Improved Essays
The term passionate refers to any powerful or compelling feeling as to love or hate. Many Americans become passionate with one another, food, and also hobbies. I for one became passionate with volleyball. In fact, it is one of the top dangerous sports. I managed to make it through numerous of years with a few sprained and jammed fingers which were surprising. I became passionate when I was recognized by a high school coach at something I thought I was doing inadequately at. Meanwhile, over the time I have developed and was awarded the MVP award. In 2009 at West Middle School, I was in the eighth grade and heard that the school was having tryouts for the new volleyball team. Although I didn’t care too much about it, but my cousin Shantel and Laterria thought it would be fun to try out. I was a rookie at the game when I first began I would constantly foul balls and double hit. Once I began to get better I became the setter of the West Warriors which is much like the quarterback in football. As the setter, I get to decide who will be better at acing the ball. An ace in volleyball is when an attacker strikes the ball, earning the team a point. As I got the hang of the things I was recognized by Jerry Tersei who was the coach of Auburn High School Girls Varsity volleyball team. I joined the Auburn volleyball camp for the first two years of high school. The camp was extremely intense and crowded. Coach Tersei made us do stadiums when we first came to camp to determine the weak and the strong. We also ran the mile which could be no more than ten minutes, which was extremely hard for me because I wasn’t much of a runner. We would also work on determining which position would fit us based our capabilities. Since I was put in a group with setters we would face the wall and do numerous wall sets around 500 every day. The setters were also isolated from the others which I did not like because they had a variety of activities that they were able to work on. At the end of every practice lower classman would scrimmage against the upperclassmen. The scrimmage would help us get a feel on how tough the other teams could be during actually an actual game. During the ninth grade, Laterria and I tried out for the volleyball team. It was a mixture of feelings for me because I was excited that I made the freshman volleyball team, but also sad that she did not make the team. My two positions were setter and defense. The setter has the major goal as I said before. However, you will have to manage to set or bump the ball to any of the hitters no matter where you are at on the floor. Although the defense is more laid back it is not as critical. …show more content…
I would switch from defense to attacker during the game. I also stepped down from being a setter because it was stressful for me. It was like a chicken running around with your head chopped off. The overall senior year was the best year of all time. It was a long journey, but having the same teammate’s made it much easier because there was already a connection among us. We helped each other progress as the years moved on. At the end of the season, it was a bittersweet moment because everyone was going to different colleges to play volley. Once the season was over we had a ceremony to celebrate our accomplishments. I received the M.V.P. award because of my hard work and dedication I made towards myself and others. All I could say in my speech was “the sprained fingers were well worth it”. Through my years of volleyball, I’ve learned that everything you manage to do always starts with a trial and error. My error was going through a sport not knowing how to comprehend the concept of the game. As we all know that once you keep going through that trial it will no longer be an error it will become a progression. If you follow the basic steps and techniques you will enhance and continue to develop and become better in a matter of

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time. I could not play volleyball my sophomore or junior year. This really upset me because I love the sport. Never in a million years would I have dreamed of making varsity as a freshman, especially for a team that had just won back-to-back state championships. Throughout middle school, I had to overcome adversity associated with being a “science nerd.” When people started to discover my academic aptitude, I was labeled a “nerd” who couldn’t be athletic. I wasn’t about to let this stereotype define me, so I strove to invalidate it. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team” throughout junior high.…

On April 2015, my volleyball team (The Pirates Volleyball Club) and I, won second place in the Manitoba Championships. We had to work really hard to get to where we were, because at the beginning of the season, our coaches put us with the age group that was one year older than us. When we started, we really struggled in tournaments. As we progressed, we worked our way up and up and got to first place, but then in our last game, against the grade eight (now grade nine) girls of Grant Park, we moved down to second place. Even though it’s not first, we did so well…

In middle school I had the opportunity presented to me to play club volleyball. There would be lots of practices and it would be very time consuming but the part that my parents didn’t like was the fact that the tournaments would be Sunday morning over church hours. I whined and complained for weeks hoping to change their mind but nothing could.…

It has become such a part of my life that I sometimes wonder if I could ever live without it, but at one point in my life I tried to hide my love for it. Volleyball isn’t considered one of the most “masculine” of sports where I live. Volleyball in the Rocky Mountains is strictly considered a girls sport, and you very seldom hear of an all guys team. I was always questioned by my friends “Isn’t that a girls’ sport?”, or, “why do you play a girls’ sport?” I never thought of volleyball as a girls’ sport before that, it was as much of a guys’ sport to me as every other sport, but these questions caused me to hide my love for volleyball in order to avoid being ridiculed by my…

Growing up in a campus town, sports were always an interest of mine. Whether it was watching the Fighting Illini or competing in sports in my junior high and high school. It seemed that every weekend of my childhood was spent running, playing soccer, swimming, or a combination of the three. It seems only fitting that sports would play a major role in finding my passion. I swam a little when I was a child, but it wasn’t until I joined the swim team in high school that I really became a dedicated swimmer.…
