Personal Narrative: Non-Profit Organization

Improved Essays
About 15 years ago, I was employed as a Program Liaison and Group Leader for a wonderful non-profit organization in South Philadelphia. This organization focused on providing resources and supports to low income families within an inner city environment. The program operated weekly and was housed in a local elementary school. Usually, students enrolled in the school would utilize our resources services for after-school programming and their parents would request additional assistance such as furniture vouchers, food vouchers, and other social service related supports.
While employed at the nonprofit organization I was instrumental in creating several programs that enhanced the scope of our organization, our demographics, and enrollment statistics.

This organization would come to me for innovative ideas to enhance their program however, they never gave me the credit for coming up with the ideas. Eventually, I left the organization because I felt used and unappreciated. Several of my ideas were transformed into programs that received funding, I would have to change my work schedule to facilitate the new program, but never reap the financial benefits or receive the recognition for my work. The last conflict that caused my separation from the organization stemmed from a program that I had created called the “Saturday Fun Club” this program was actually created as a practicum assignment for a city run program that worked closely with community organizations within “at risk” communities. The “Saturday Fun Club” was created and managed on a budget of only five-hundred dollars but because I think outside of the box I was able to network with existing organizations, universities, and outside entities to offset the cost of certain events and activities as well as to offer additional financial support throughout the …show more content…
We successfully, enrolled roughly 80 participants into the 6-week program. And each week students would engage in activities related to one of more of the principles previously noted. Our participants took turns sharing the responsibility of both cleaning up and preparing meals for the group. We had elders who volunteered to teach drum lessons and life skills, and we took trips to places like the Underground Railroad to introduce the students to the history of African people in America. Needless, to say the city of Philadelphia was impressed with my practicum and I received a citation from the City as well as a plaque for developing such a wonder program.
The city decided that the program needed to continue and awarded me a grant of ten thousand dollars to fund the program. Here is where the conflict developed. The organization decided to change my regular scheduled hours to now include the Saturday Fun Club program and they used roughly 50% of the allotted grant for administrative cost. I had promised my volunteers that they would now be compensated for the time they invested in the program and we would use the additional funds to continue to offer wonderful programming for our

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

Leadership is imperative to supporting the foundation of succession in our society. It is important that we exercise our God given right to utilize our sphere of influence to the best of our abilities. Although leadership may gain you more recognition throughout society it is not about the affluence one can acquire; leading is solely about guiding others down a path of success so that future generations can more easily learn from our mistakes to pass down to the next generation. That is why I believe mentoring and any position of leadership should be central to young adults to set the example for the impactful youth. I found my sphere of influence to be within the academic driven chapter of the National Honor Society which in my senior year I was elected president.…

When I started attending Northern Virginia Community College, I joined the Black Student Alliance(BSA). My perception of this club had nothing to do with reality. I thought it was a club made to bring awareness of what is happening in the world in general and in the black community in particular. For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

When an employer or college is looking at an applicant’s resume, volunteering experience is a beneficial item to add, especially if it is a related field. Some people are just love to help out the community by volunteering. Many different volunteer programs are appealing to different people, like helping take care of puppies at the animal shelter for animal lovers, caring for a child at a children’s hospital if they are affectionate towards children, or serving a meal at a food kitchen for a chef or someone who is inspired to help the needy. I am called to a different group to volunteer with: the elderly. Each organization helps the elderly in different ways, but my favorite cause is that of Meals on Wheels.…
