Personal Narrative: My Understanding Of My Hispanic Culture

Improved Essays
It was six A.M. and we were all dragging ourselves to get up from the bed. The family and I were heading for Mexico and the plane was to leave at 8:30 a.m. We had packed earlier that week. I was anxious mostly because my father would continuously talk about the dangers of the streets and people. The time though would arrive when we would all aboard the plane to fly to Guadalajara, Mexico. After a five hour delay and a two-hour flight, we finally touched down in Mexico. While in the country, we traveled to stores and outside restaurants. There were many people who I interacted with and got the chance to talk to. Throughout my this journey I would learn and experience many things that expands my knowledge and understanding of my Hispanic culture. The first day we touched down the first day of my journey. The first day was one in the morning and was chaotic. There were people everywhere and some home lights were even still on. I could see just how much my origins are different to what I'm used to with my American culture. There were houses crammed next to one another as if they shared their adjacent sides. Each house was not exactly identical, but all of them were rectangular and rigid. They all seemed humbled homes and you could even find a cat scouting the top of the connected rooftop. Nearly every house were flamboyant colors. I saw colors like pink, lime-green, purple, and orange. The view that you can get of a canyon. While viewing just how small and humbling all of the houses were, I learned about my culture in how we do not focus on luxury but happiness of life. I feel this expanded my respect of my Hispanic culture because we focus on respect of family and fun instead of glory and money. The second part of my journey includes venturing out during the day time and experiencing all of the stores and restaurants. What I quickly noticed though was that nearly everyone owned their own stores and shops. These humble shops were alike the homes by being directly next to eat other and compacted onto the street sides. Most of them were constituted to fit inside a garage. Occasionally, you would hear a voice or truck announcing to what felt like the whole world what products they were selling or promoting. The streets, however, were filled and I felt like with everyone walking across streets, driving, selling, and looking at objects on …show more content…
My journey began as soon as I stepped out of the airport. While getting to see how similar the houses were structurally but were all unique from their color, I learned how my Hispanic culture includes being humble about themselves, what they own, and their lives in general. Getting out into the streets and being able to see everyone's shops and restaurants was amazing. After that experience, I learned that my culture relies on the community to work together to support each other. I then met my relatives that I haven't even gotten to meet. I learned at that moment that my Hispanic culture truly revolves around loving and having family to share experiences with even through the toughest times. After doing all of those things and learning so much, i would not mind having to wake up at six in the morning to do it

My parents were very caring and helpful and kept trying to move us to places where we would have a chance at success. When we finally settled their seemed to only be one logical thing to do... help other immigrants settle here!…

On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

I am now able to appreciate the traits that come from both of the cultures I live in, whether it be the opportunistic outlook on life that I have developed from living in the United States or the motivation that comes from living in a Mexican household. I have developed goals of success, such as attending a four year university and majoring in political science. My Mexican side has encouraged me to work as hard as I can to end the cycle of poverty that has plagued my family and be the first to go to college and obtain a degree. Since then I have grown to love the fact that I am Mexican-American even more and more. I love that I am bilingual, and I believe that this trait will help me obtain the career in law that I desire.…
