This was the start of my passion to travel around the world. One memorable trip was one that I took with my family to Vietnam when I was twelve. Life was so different there compared to the one I have at home. From the lifestyle, people, culture, tradition, and even the environment. It was definitely amazing to see the world with new eyes and a different perspective.…
Countries all over the world face many different problems typically the problems vary based on the country location. However, Latin American countries all face the same issues. From low education rates, migration, and violence and crime increasing. These issues are no different with Honduras, a Latin American country which is located west of Guatemala and south of El Salvador. Although Honduras faces these three challenges, there are several strengths that help Honduras overcome these issues.…
Osteopathic Medicine Personal Statement As a child, I had the opportunity to grow up in Haiti, in doing so I had the opportunity to learn and interact with the culture in my early years. The remainder of my formal education was completed in the United States, but the experience that I went through in my early life in Haiti, I assumed helps mold and shape my optimistic perception of the future. Growing up within a disadvantaged community there were tough times, moments in which any individuals could not help but feel a sense powerlessness, those were some of the moments that shaped my views. This I believed have instill within me the motivation to help individuals in need.…
Another huge experience that has changed my outlook on life was going to the service project for the Isaac school district. The children attending the schools at the Isaac school district are in intense poverty. I have gone during the school days to help out in the classroom, to bring Thanksgiving dinner boxes, and to deliver a Christmas gifts to the kids. The kids on these campuses have the most amazing attitudes in the worst conditions. Some of the children go home on Friday and don't have a meal until they come back to school on Monday.…
Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…
My two sides American and Honduran People thing is a very unique experience being in born in the USA and having a Hispania or Latino background. In a ways is very unique having two different background; I get to learn two different language English and Spanish. I get to know my American culture and my Honduran culture. It is not always easy being Hispanic American.…
Most of my development can be traced back to my Vietnamese Catholic youth group that I have been a part of for pretty much my entire life. Through weekly activities, helping with local events and organizations, hosting plays, and service for our church, I find myself to be much of an influential than a participant. Our time is spent interpreting pieces from the bible and how we can connect those pieces to our daily lives. Being part of this learning allowed me to improve my faith significantly. The community helped me become more than just typical generous person, someone who is willing of sacrifice his time for others, someone who worries for others when they are not feeling well, someone who desperately wants to make a positive impact.…

This summer I was presented with the opportunity to go on a mission trip to the mountains of honduras. When I accepted this opportunity I was not aware of the effect it would have on my life and character. Honduras is a third world country with one of the highest murder rates in the world. The violence and poverty have a huge impact on Honduran society. Things that we take for granted, such as indoor plumbing, is a foreign luxury to the people of honduras.…
Over the course of my life I have had experiences that have expanded my cultural bubble. This past month, I have focused in on two experiences specifically. One of these was a lecture I attended in Lagomarcino October 22nd called “SO that Any Child May Succeed – Indigenous Pathways toward Justice and the Promise of Brown" by Teresa McCarty. The other was part of a conference I attended the weekend of October 23-25 called Main Event. I decided to go to the Brown lecture because I felt that I could understand it best, and make connections to class.…
My mission trip to Managua, Nicaragua was undoubtedly the most eye-opening experience of my life. During my stay there, I worked with Cantera, an organization that funds education and community development programs for the people of Managua and the surrounding area. I was able to visit some of the Cantera program sites and participate in various projects. My favorite experience was working with high school students from Managua designing a mural on an outside wall of their school building. Even though we did not share a common language, we found different ways to communicate.…
For this final lab, I decided to interview my mother. I thought this would be a great opportunity to learn a little more about the Latino and Salvadorian culture. I asked my mother about traditions that are celebrated in El Salvador, the types foods that are served, housing, and more. Through the things that I would learn through the interview, I was able to point out differences between the Salvadoran and American cultures. This final lab also allowed me to analyze how I will use my Spanish and knowledge in the future, to further my career and successes in life.…
I was given the opportunity to travel and experience the Spanish culture. I am so grateful for my experiences and all the things I learned in Costa Rica. By learning a little bit about a new language, I was about to create instant friendships with people by speaking a few words the recognize. To the children, Americans seemed so different. I was able to make connections with them by speaking their language.…
They did not want me to end my observation. They were very excited about me attending their classroom. They express their love and compassion for me as their teacher. The strength in their compassion committed me to educate them with positive guidance. I believe there is a positive way to impact children to make good decision and believe in their selves to succeed in positive environments.…
Log 1 Nancy Mickelson Dynamics of Racism & Oppression Simmons School of Social Work Log 1 Week 4 Self reflection recording exercise: I looked back at the questions I had answered and then reviewed the recording I had made in response to the questions. What I had heard from myself was more than I expected. I heard that I didn 't view myself as a racist or view people as different by their color or where they come from. I proudly used my age as an excuse to put my racial web of denial out there. I believed that I was a good person when I thought about the topic of racial discrimination and the thought process that I was perhaps different.…
