Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Golf Team

The 5 minutes was almost up. That’s all the time you get to look for your ball in a tournament. My socks were wet from all the dew that had not yet evaporated from the long blades of grass that I was searching through frantically. I zigzagged my way through the weeds, hopelessly, until the alarm sounded and my time expired. The walk of shame back to the tee box is an uncomfortable experience for anyone. Yet I felt no discomfort from the trip, my saturated socks making noises in my cleated leather shoes, or the unexpected gusts that seemed to pierce right through my windbreaker. It was all part of the grind, and after hitting my tee shot once again, I advanced down the fairway with a blank stare, continuing my round as I had all day. I could see the rest of the team trailing me, looking down, somber, and defeated. My coach followed in the distance, knowing there was nothing he could do to help what was happening. Blowing the chance to win a state championship is an experience like no other. It’s a broad rollercoaster of unpleasant emotions over the course of hours that end up feeling like a few minutes. What started as surprise changed to worry, the worry to anger, the anger to despair, and the despair to shame. Composure became a challenge, and I found myself repeatedly checking to ensure that how I was feeling on the inside was not visible to anybody on the outside. As the round went on, more and more of the world around me became blocked out. All I could do was focus on the shot, hit the shot, find the shot, and repeat the process all over again. On the 18th hole, I was the first in our group to finish, and waited, tapping my foot anxiously from the side of the green, for the rest of my group to finish. This tapping brought me a few years back, when I would Irish Dance on the docks of Alaska as tourists boarded their cruise ships for tips to pay for …show more content…
I started spending more and more time at the golf course, and I started doing better and better in tournaments. Seeing this, I began to apply it to other things I was passionate about. I became the best saxophone player in my band. I began to actually notice progress from going to the gym. I even started making better stock investment decisions. It changed my entire outlook on life and what I'm capable of achieving. My thoughts were interrupted by a loud roar. A player local to the hosting town had just made his putt to tie the lead, and the crowds had erupted in approval. I was genuinely happy for him. He had worked hard and achieved his goal, but what did that mean for me? After the round, I thought more on this, and concluded that I hadn’t prepared enough. If I would have asked myself the same question only a year earlier, I would have certainly believed that I had prepared more than enough, and thought of a separate excuse to blame my misfortune. However, that was the old me, and the new me knew that I just had to work harder. And when state came around the next year, the medalist pin on my chest and team championship trophy in my hands was proof enough that all my hard work had finally paid

During the first game of the tournament, my team played very well. We had a huge lead on the other team, and we struck out the opposing team's batters almost immediately. In the sixth inning, I was playing second base while the other team was batting. The batting player got a strike on the first pitch, but hit the ball far into left field on the second pitch. The batter ran past first base, while my teammate was able to catch up the rolling ball and hurl the ball towards me.…

It was like, it was only me and the golf course and another day at the office. Before we headed out Mr. Hill huddled us in a circle and gave us three seniors, Morgan, Gabby, and myself an emotional speech telling us, “No matter what, I just want you guys to have fun and even if you do bad, know that I know you tried your best.” Which made us burst into tears like the Niagra falls. I started off great and made my big numbers from yesterday small and my small numbers even smaller. Cutting to the chase, I defeated my girl by seven, giving me hope that we had a chance because I knew Morgan could get the other four strokes easily and Gabby could get one or two, and still have plenty of strokes left over.…

But then came my second shot which fades a little right and almost in the sand, I chip on and then four putt. All I was saying after that hole was “Really you come all the way here to four putt, that's just great Andria.” If that doesn't describe the team's effort that day, I don’t know what does. Fast Forwarding to the end of the day, I shot an 86, Gabby shot an 84, Morgan 78, and Lindsay 99. That meant we were heading into the second day eleven strokes back and in third place.…

When I was about six years old, my friends who were about 12 or 13 at the time invited me to the baseball field. The one bad part was that to get to the baseball field we had to cross a major road to get there, but at least there was a light. My parents told me I could only go if we were being driven, but I went anyway. It was scary crossing the street, mostly because we did not cross at the crosswalk. We were too lazy to walk down the neighborhood and cross at the light.…

“Oh, Jesus”! I shrieked out as the knife slid through my skin as I endlessly hacked away at the gobs of raw chicken breast I was preparing for tomorrow morning. My face began to pale and every part of my body seemed to go numb, except my mind. Working overtime, my body trailed off into thought, deeming the injury at hand trivial and obsolete. I put the summer before my junior year of high school into perspective.…

My recurrent shoulder dislocations were a constant battle, but a battle in which I’d always won. After a dislocation, all it took was a couple weeks of physical therapy before I could return to the baseball field. Although, after my fifth dislocation I ended up sitting in the hospital awaiting the results of my MRI with an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. My surgeon soon returned with news that my injury required a season-ending surgery. Thus, I had a Bankart Repair on my throwing shoulder, and afterwards, although devastated, I supported my teammates from the sidelines for the entirety of the season.…
