Personal Narrative: My Military Journey

I was born on September 1st 2001, I was a happy baby ready for the world to come. I was a very energetic I always wanted to know what was happening. Some of my favorite memories of me with my family were (and still are) the long road trips we do to San Diego. Also I really enjoyed flying to Connecticut to see my mom's side of the family. In the Hollister history the best road trip was when the car broke down just before the Grape Vine ( it is a big hill just before LA). We had to pull over and where in a Starbucks parking lot for around 4 hours figuring out what happened, (the transmission blew) and flushing the transmission fluid. We left for the Grape Vine at eleven o'clock. We had to flush the fluid around 4 times. The entire trip took …show more content…
I always loved the idea of serving my country for as long as I can remember. And I thought what better way to mix my love for airplanes and wanting to join the military than to fly off aircraft carriers in the Navy. Now you may be asking why not join the Air Force. Their main focus is airplanes and it is much more safe to take off a long runway. For that I have to thank my dad’s friend Alden Mills. Alden was a Navy SEAL for seven years, He also became a platoon commander for the SEALs. I remember we were at a dinner party at his house, and he was telling me about the navy and what he did. ( I was about 8 Years old) That conversation really sparked my interest in the Navy. A little bit down the road a my parents let we watch Top Gun for the first time. It was the coolest thing ever. Maverick and Goose shooting down the Russian migs. From that moment I knew that is what I wanted to do. After a few years In fifth grade I learned about the Naval Academy, this was great news, an entire school dedicated to preparing you for the next six years you are going to spend in the navy. I wanted to learn more about the school. So I talked to Alden who also went to the Naval Academy. we talked for a solid 2 hours, I learned a lot and it just fueled the

In reading Harry & Mary Meinhardt’s legacy, I was reminded of my own career in the military. I also enlisted in the United States Army right out of high school, at the tender ager of 17. And much like Harry, I proudly served for twenty-six years. I rose the rank of Sergeant First Class before transitioning to a Warrant Officer. Having an education has always been of value to me and so has the idea of helping others.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

This training has shaped me into a new man. The U.S. Marine Corps training is worse than you could ever imagine. They take you in, and they break you down, turning you into the man they want and need you to be. They're hard on us, harder than mom and dad ever were. I thought it would be easier than this, but boy oh boy was I wrong.…

Before the summer of my sophomore year, I had not thought about my post high school plans beyond knowing I would like to attend college. However, I attended a STEM camp at Valparaiso University in Indiana where I met former astronaut and Naval Academy graduate, Ken Ham. He inspired me to not only begin my own flight training, but to start investigating the Naval Academy. The more I learned about the Naval Academy and the different opportunities that serving as an officer in the military presented, the more determined I became to attend. I understand that the decision to attend a service academy is not to be taken lightly.…

Men are starving to death, there is hardly any supplies, but we are still going to win this war. The Patriots(Americans who supported independence) have just been defeated at the Battle of Germantown. The army then set up camp at Valley Forge for the winter. There are approximately 12,000 soldiers here, most under the age of 20. They are living in crowded, damp tents and many of the them do not have clothes to cover their whole body let alone to keep them warm.…

I live my life on a legacy of war survivors. My family's standards toward success have always been a key factor as I was being raised. As a young musician, my grandfather’s optimistic views deteriorated the moment he got drafted for World War II.Appointed as commander in the tanks divison, my grandfather felt his everlasting ego grow as he protected his country. The moment of victory however soon vanished when an oncoming tank shot down my grandfather’s tank, destroying everything in sight. He was able to escape from the commander’s hatch, but as he struggled to get his best-friend out of the tank, the tank exploded.…

Not many people in this country would sign up for a job where you can get killed any given day, where you can be shipped to any given place in the world at any time, or where they are forced to create a will at the age of 18 or 19. Many young men across this country sign up for a minimum of a 4 year contract to join the United States military. In my opinion they are the bravest people in the country and rightfully so. They have to leave their loved ones to protect us from all enemies foreign and domestic. I had the pleasure of interviewing three of my friends who are serving or who have served before, and we will take a look through their eyes.…

Though, the one experience that has had the most significant continuous impact on my life, the one I have gained the most knowledge from, would be growing up with a military parent. Being in a military family you learn a multitude of information at a very young age and see the world for what is actually is and not what it is made out to be. From living the military lifestyle from birth to now I’ve learned to mature as a very young adolescent, to be selfless, and to not take anything for granted.…

I am an American. I say it with the utmost pride and respect. Some citizens don’t stand when they hear, “The National Anthem” play, they don’t remove their hats, and sometimes they even talk over our song. They don’t feel great pride when they see The United States of America’s flag waving high in the air. Some Americans tend to think of being free, having personal rights, being allowed to speak up and many other rights as normal, but in other countries living in America and having the opportunities we have everyday is only a dream to them.…
